Powered monitors vs. power amp & passive monitors

I'm wondering which is the best way to go for a band. If you use powered monitors, you can get 4 seperate mixes out of a 4 return snake while having 1 less heavy amp in the rig. I'd like to hear from people who have used both setups and what you prefer.
