A friend of mine from college showed me a porn website that belonged to his math teacher, and no one ever made a fuss about that...

It was just a hands-on lesson in geometry. Very useful.

I'm guessing it wasn't when he was in 7th and 8th grade.  Parents are very protective of sex with pre teens and just getting into teens.

If by "protective" you mean something more like, "idiotically believing their kids won't ever have sex, don't want to have sex, and are innocent creatures."

Just heard this story, and it's somewhat relevant... bout the same age, apparently my brother saw a porn video at a friends house. People found out, my parents got that, "oh I'm so sorry" call, typical of the reaction in America... my dad talked to my brother, told him, "you'll never last that long," and pretty much left it at that.

Over here there's an increasing phenomenon of kids making their own pr0n and recording it with their phones before playing it to their friends in class.  I didn't believe it at first, but I'm assured by some friends that have young teenage kids that it is going on.  Heaven help them if they should succeed at anything and become prominent in the media... you can bet your ass that the footage will surface in years to come..... Life in Britain....  :omg:

If they were in the US, they'd be charged with child pornography for having naked pictures OF THEMSELVES on their phone.

Reminds me of this one interview I once saw for Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, in which Olivia Hussey as Juliet was not permitted in the US to see the film, for fear of seeing her own breasts.

Not gonna vouch for my parents strong suit on that issue, but it's still a lot better than punishing your kid for doing something he's going to do, he was built to do, and something you likely did or would have done yourself.

What's wrong with you.  I have no problem with any one's personal life and I think the school F'ed it up but if you can't see why parents of 12 and 13 year old's would have a problem with it coming out, your just out of whack.  I wouldn't think of schoolwork at all If I was 12 and 13 after seeing the video.  And I'm tired of this "America" bullshit.

I love sex just as much as the next person but you want your kids not to see their teachers in sex video's.  We are talking Jr High here.  Not High School.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with me, and I'm pretty sure I saw my first hard core porn by the time I was in 8th grade.

Not wanting something doesn't mean it won't happen, and acting as if it doesn't have to happen is silly. Also, if your kid is looking up porn you don't want him to see, maybe you should consider the fact that you're not keeping a close enough eye on your kids activities. Seems to me it's at least as much a failure of parenting, if you actually want to get into the blame game, for a kid to see the porn video, as it is the teacher who made it.

And so, if they were in 9th grade, it would be aokay?

Reality is in the middle. But, you can't just brush this off as "oh, kids will look at porn anyway!" porn when I was in middle school was my friend's dad's Playboys. Hard to believe that was already like 10 years ago. Damn.

Sorry, but why not?

Because, as the law stands now, it's illegal for these kids to look at porn.

The more years that pass the more you're going to have to deal with the simple reality that kids are going to be able to find anything and everything they want online, and it's only going to get easier as time goes by. The amount of information that's freely available to us is great, but it also means parents can't just pretend certain things won't come up by censoring what their kids are exposed to anymore. Instead we'll need to teach our kids how to deal with certain topics in a healthy, mature way.

Let's see here.  Seneca is absolutely correct that Americans are far to uptight about sexuality, and therefore porn.  It actually borders on paranoia at times.  Ehra is probably wrong that this is all about that uptightness.  Rather than a fear of sexuality, I'd chalk it up to an understanding of it.  Kids have a preoccupation with sex, and this would be a monumental source of distraction.  I agree with Scheavo that there's a huge difference between not wanting your kids whacking off in front of Back Door Sluts IX and completely blowing your stack over it.  It's not the end of the world, and honestly, a huge overreaction from mom and dad will probably be far more harmful than the porn itself.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Because it's obviously been an ineffective law.

There is a big difference to watching a porn by some hot bimbo you've never met or will never meet and seeing a porn of a person in your life like a teacher.  That is the difference.  You don't think I had Penthouse with sticky pages at age 12 and 13?  Yet if I had a hot teacher and I saw that porno (You kids don't know how lucky you are with the access to porno's via the internet) I would never pay attention to what she had to say.  My imagination would be running wild.

The school handled it wrong like many others said and that's the real discussion, not if kids should or shouldn't see porn.  Stop with the age Scheavo, that's not the argument.

This, without question.  This has nothing to do with a hangup about sex.

I bet the parents that object to this are the same parents that allow their children to download uncensored rap music and watch MTV as they please.... A teacher being in a past porno is not going to corrupt or alter their children's future.... even if they watch it in 8th grade. Parents need to butt out. Odds are none of these kids would have ever known their teacher was in such a video, I'd bet almost any amount of money they have all seen it now.

When i was in 6th grade, my friends and why would sit in front of the tv until about 4 AM trying to catch any glimpse of a tit or vagina on those fuzzy paper view channels (they were fuzzy 12 years ago, not sure about today). Had we had the Internet... You could bet everything you own that we would have been watching hardcore stuff.

Knowing my parents, probably. They are not internet or computer savvy, at all. My obsessive gaming at the time was the perfect cover.

I guess that would work. As I've gotten older, I've found that my parents were a lot smarter than I gave them credit for when I was a teenager. In VERY surprising ways.

edit: I wanted to edit this so we weren't almost agreeing to a small degree. But I said fuck it, today's a good day. Things can change.

I don't see where anyone is arguing that point. I see where the school district felt that having a teacher who the students know to be in a pornographic movie will be a distraction from the students being able to learn from said teacher.

Granted, it's the district's fault for sending out that stupid letter and making the porn known to a lot more students than would have otherwise...

Ya know, they could probably check to see if this is true. If the real reason was becuase they felt the teacher couldn't teach - which I don't think it is - why not actually study the class, look at grades, and watch over it? And if it is true, I'd say Orbert hit it on the head earlier:

Her current school district could at least have kept their mouths shut for another two months and let her finish out the year, infinitely increasing her chances of getting a job elsewhere.  But they didn't just fire her; they ended her career.  They didn't have to do that.

She can kiss any chance of landing another teaching gig goodbye.
