'ey Hef, you're 4 posts from having the highest postcount on DTF since James got banned. I just wanted to congratulate you and let you know that if you're in the Raleigh area any time soon, you can stop by my place for free beer and cupcakes to commemorate this.

Here's a good one, as one of the more respected and looked up to elders of the forum, what advice would you give to the kids of the forum as they struggle to find themselves and their places in life?
Get a filter.  Be yourself, by all means, but don't be ALL of yourself ALL of the time.  Filter some stuff out.  And watch your language, and respect your elders.

When did you join the forums? (kinda lame, I know, but with you being a mod and stuff you can't see that from the membergroup)
I joined in February 2005, but I read the forums without joining for several years before that.

How did you get into Dream Theater?
In 1992, Pull Me Under was played on my local rock radio station.  Then Take The Time, Under A Glass Moon, and Another Day were also played.  That's what motivated me to get into Dream Theater, and from there into other prog rock.

I move my daughter into school in Durham in August.  We'll see if I have time.

Wow, really? I always thought of you as being around before me, or at least you always felt like a well established member for as long as I can recall, and I joined in January 2005. When did the original hefdaddy facts / god thing come up? (you can count that as my question, I suppose)

Late 2005/early 2006, IIRC.

I like that I've been around long enough to have been here when things like this were born.  I seem to recall that someone was making references to Hypnotoad, which I'd never heard of (sue me), and either I or someone else decided to take this already posted picture:

and PS the sunglasses on the Hypnotoad, resulting in this:

Someone then put it on a transparent background and shrunk it and b1 made an emoticon out of it.  Voila.

What's the origin of  :hefdaddy?
People used to worship me.  It has died down over the last few years, but I was regarded as a deity here for a couple of years.

What is the strangest piece of music you've heard?

The worst?
Oh, I don't know.  I will think about it.

I am enjoying it very much.  I love McCarthy.

Hef, I know you play acoustic guitar.  What brand and what is your dream acoustic?
I already play my dream acoustic - a Guild D55.

I didn't know you're a musician.  What genres do you play?
Mostly folk and Christian/worship music, with a side of classic rock.  I'm not good enough to do anything else, and that is where my heart is.  But I'm a decent rhythm player.

How much is enough?
Depends on what we're talking about.  Some things, there is a certain amount that is enough (such as, how much time to spend at a little kid's birthday party).  Other things, there is no such thing as enough (such as, how many blowjobs per week do you want).

Dammit Hef....you know this isn't what I wanted.

What is the most important thing in life?
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. How awkward.

Hmmmm...I did not know this.
Oh yes.  My favorites include Suttree, Blood Meridian, All The Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and No Country For Old Men.

What is the most important thing in life?
My standard joke response is the line from Conan The Barbarian, when he is asked what is a slightly differently-worded question ("What is best in life?"):

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!

But in all seriousness, I think that relationships are the most important things in life.  Whether we are talking relationships with our families, our friends, our community, or our God, that is the most important thing in life, IMHO.

What is your morning routine like?
After morning ablutions, I have coffee and sometimes breakfast while doing my computer thing (email, DTF, a few other sites).  Get dressed, go to work.  Nothing very exciting.

Where did your username come from?
"hef" = the first half of my surname.  "daddy" = my familial relationship (2 daughters).  "42" = the Answer.

Are you a strict parent?
I am strict on foundational expectations of comportment and behavior.  But above that, no, I am pretty lenient.  And it seems to be working.  Not to toot my own horn, but my kids are awesome, as people, students, and leaders among their peers.

Hobbies include reading, enjoying food & drink, sports, music (listening & playing).  What I would love to try would be working in film.  That seems fascinating.  Not necessarily acting, but all the other shit.

I would also love to write, but for whatever reason I don't take the time to do so.
