Actors that are as good, and many who are better include...
Robert Downey Jr.
Samuel L. Jackson
Robert Dinero
Al Pacino
Tom Hanks
Dustin Hoffman
Gene Hackman
Sean Penn
Daniel Day Lewis
Jack Nicholson
Morgan Freeman
George Clooney
Denzel Washington
Russel Crowe

He is good, but the best? Too many great actors out there.

Sure Depp only usually plays one kind of role, but there's a reason for that. Can't think of anyone better at that particular sort of role.

When I think of Depp and his movies, I can't remember one that I thought that he was bad in.  At least off the top of my head.

I like that movie Depp made with Tim Burton. You know, the one where he plays a charming eccentric opposite of Helena Bonham Carter.  :lol

I like Depp, don't get me wrong, but DAMN, the Burton thing's getting kind of silly.

Despite their odd public appeal, Depp has done A LOT more than Tim Burton movies.

Cry-Baby
Benny & Joon
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Don Juan Demarco
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Man who Cried
Chocolat
Blow
Pirates
Finding Neverland

And even Tim Burton used to make good movies with him. Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood come to mind.

Sure he might not be the greatest in the world. But he is EXTREMELY diverse, despite his recent string of horrible Tim Burton movies. That's like saying Deniro isn't good cause he hasn't made a good move in over 10 years.

He certainly is a great actor, but to say he is the best of our time is a stretch. He keeps Tim Burton in business.

You can totally turn the whole turning point Pirates was for his career. Yesterday I was watching The Rum Diaries and couldn't ignore the "that's so Captain Jack Sparrow" performance.
