I hate the early nineties so much  :lol

The early nineties brought us some of the hardest rap/hip-hop of all time. Specifically Da Lench Mob's "Guerrillas in the Mist." That track goes so damn hard.

He's great. I would love to see him more often in non-Tim Burton movies though. I have nothing against Burton's movies, but they are not exactly my cup of tea. (at least no the last couple of movies)

Totally with you on the less Tim Burton thing. They have made some really good movies together, but I feel like too many of them are just too similar for me to really get into them.

And this little album called Images & Words.

And the Black Album, but none of this makes up for the shittiness of the music videos and the hip hop beats of the early nineties.

Dude, early 90's hip-hop is like the best.  You're really hurting my feelings with all of this early 90's bashing.  Next thing I know you're going to start trashing Beverly Hills, 90210  :'(

But I'm not bashing Beverly Hills, 90210, I never saw it. I'll take your word that it was good

He does plenty, just whenever he does a Burton film (i.e. when Burton makes a film) people get all huffy about it. I think it's because he did a bunch in a row in the mid-00s. But since 2007 he's done 2 Burton films (Alice in Wonderland and now Dark Shadows) and 7 non-Burton films (2 of which admittedly only had small roles).

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

He's a very talented actor, I'll give him that, no question, but greatest actor of our time?  Ehhhh, I don't know about that.  There have been many actors already named in this thread, as well as a number of others who I have not seen yet, that are just as talented, and more then a few who are more so.

Just to throw out a few names here:

Willem Dafoe
Patrick Stewart
Gary Oldman
Laurence Fishburne
John Malkovitch
Morgan Freeman
Robert Downey Jr.
Hugh Jackman
Denziel Washington
Kelsey Grammar
Leonardo DiCaprio (from Catch Me If You Can onward)

also gonna bump Christopher Walken, Laim Nesson, Michael Keaton, Heath Ledger, Philip Seymor-Hoffman and Daniel Day-Lewis

Seriously, there are a lot of actors out there of genius level acting talent that have just not attained the near-ubiquitous pop culture phenomena status of Johnny Depp

Robert Downey Jr.

I like this list, along with Daniel Day-Lewis and Christian Bale.  I fear that RDJ, after being so successful with Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, is gonna be typecast into this really smug almost-an-asshole with a heart of gold.  But he's proven he can do other kinds of roles and do them well, so its okay.

REthread: List of actors who are better than Johnny Depp
« Reply #44 on: April 19, 2012, 03:12:56 PM »
To add to the list:

David Hyde-Pierce. I've only seen and liked him in one film and one film only and that is the only movie needed on his roster to put him above Depp considering he's creepier, funnier, more diverse and all around more badass than Depp in any of his films. Which is: The Perfect Host. Such an amazingly awesome movie. I really, really, really want Pierce to do more movies that showcase his talent such as this. He can go from completely carefree and funny to utterly uncomfortable and threatening in a matter of seconds; it's impressive how talented the man is. That said, Depp just has more movies to show his talent but if Pierce did as many movies as Depp I think he'd be so much more popular and wanted for bigger roles.

Anyway, random...just saw the movie again this afternoon and every time I am both laughing till I'm crying and cringing in fear of the man. He's awesome. I hate Frasier. More creepers!

Paul Giamatti
Brad Pitt

This man as well; he's amazing but recently for whatever reason he has been doing the shittiest, weirdest rolls and it does not suit him well. Although he's got plenty of roles under his belt to do so if he's in a slump.

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

Giamatti is one of the few actors that I can believe he is truly taking the role of whomever he is portraying. Daniel-Day Lewis is also one of these guys, but he has already been mentioned.

edit: i will see any Giamatti movie simply because he is in it. Regardless of how shitty the movie is, Giamatti is 99% of the time flawless.

All I've ever seen him in was Fight Club, and I loved it.

Ed Norton.

He's pretty good. Pitt, I think, gets highly underrated because of his good looks.

Agreed.  Same with Tom Cruise (well, Tom also has his craziness working against him :P).  Still, they're both world class actors who easily deserve mention here.

Movies with outstanding acting performances:

Marlon Brando in the Godfather
Pitt in  Moneyball (just for a recent movie)
Christopher Waltz in Inglorious Basterds
DiCaprio in Shutter Island

That should take some time to watch if you haven't seen them. I'll come up with a better list later, but I have so many movies that it's ridiculous.

Depp's okay, but he sure likes playing pale creepy dudes. Have you seen the pic of him as Tonto in the Lone Ranger? What a goof.

And Dark Shadows looks appalling.

Holy Shit!  I just realized no one has yet mentioned Anthony Hopkins!  That man is a god among actors.   :metal

Also, bumping Christof Waltz and Marlon Brando.

Oh, and for the nerds out there, I got to mention David Warner.  He never really plays any leading roles, but he's brought his considerable talents to bear on numerous occasions in television and cinema.

As fucking weird as Brando ended up being, the dude was legendary on the screen.

Yeah, I gotta bump him too.  Perfect example of an actor who can play a wide variety of roles across genres will still bringing his unmistakable personal stamp of character.

Did you ever see Less Than Zero Matt?  A movie from the 80's and I think your love his role.  Eerily mirrors some of his life.  I think that's how he was so good in that role.

If the thread turned into a favorite actors thread I'll post mine:
Edward Norton (the best)
Jack Nicholson
Brad Pitt
Mel Gibson
Johnny Depp
Then there are actors who only have one style and so they're not good actors but I enjoy that one style of their's so I am a fan, it's a category on it's own and I wish they'd have one word to describe it:
Ray Liotta
Robert De Niro
Jim Carey
James Woods
Michael J. Fox
Bruce Willis
There's probably more that I don't recall right now.

Greatest actor of our time:

No-one comes close in my mind. I am very fond of Leonardo DiCaprio though, and if someone said Tom Hanks (which I don't think anyone has yet), I wouldn't argue.

Marlon Brando was brilliant, but I wouldn't call him an actor of "our time".

Yeah, I would definitely place Sean Connery in that category.  He don't really break out of their character niche, but he is an amazing actor in his own right, and quite frankly, why would you ever want to cast Sean Connery as anything other then a badass with a Scottish accent?

Also, James Earl Jones, Ian McKellan and Christopher Lee.  'Nuff said.

Yeah, but the thread can't be locked yet because now we have to find who is indeed the greatest  :P
