Meh, I grow tire of him only playing the eccentric, quirky, weird dude.

It's like he's becoming Michael Cera.

I agree. I'd like to see him play some normal people.

He does play some weird characters, but he's played plenty of "Normal" people too.

Ed Wood
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Blow
Public Enemies

Edit:  Greatest actor of our time, though?  I don't know.  One of the greatest, perhaps.

There wasn't one "normal" molecule in Hunter S. Thompson's body but the rest of Barry's list seems to make a decent case.

Huge Depp fan reporting, pre-pirates fan.
Sleepy Hollow and Secret Window are my favorites, From Hell and Ninth Gate come next. Every collaboration with Tim Burton is on my list of favorites of course.

It's like he's becoming Michael Cera.

That is the worst analogy in the history of analogies. Unless by 'eccentric, quirky, weird dude' you meant ‘annoying talentless hack.’

He is always entertaining, which, at the end of the day, is his job, and he does his job just about as well as anyone today. It will be interesting to see how he develops as an actor as he ages, and he will have to take more mature roles. My guess is if he stays committed, he will do quite well.

He is talented, but in no way do I consider him the greatest actor of our time.

Put him in a weird costume, give him some weird makeup.  Tell him to go be weird.  That's the Depp formula.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I can't deny that he's good, but I prefer David Tennant.

Then again, I haven't really watched many Depp films so I suppose my opinion is invalid :')

I enjoy Depp's work but I think the amount of fawning over him is a bit unwarranted, although he is very talented... I just don't think he's that talented. He can definitely portray a variety of characters and really get into the roles but there is a bit of a static aspect to his persona that seems to translate over from role to role. It's lucky for him that said quality is one that can allow him to play the quirkiest of character, but yeah some diversity in types of roles would be nice. I can't say there's a role I've seen him in that I really didn't enjoy his performance, though a few movies (Pirates) brought his acting down a notch. Overall though, wonderful actor indeed with some great movies in his pocket.

I'm looking forward to at least checking out Dark Shadows, although it does look like it could be a bit too odd for my tastes; I'm also becoming weary of all things Burton. But it does look intriguing.

Was just about to post that Ali  :lol

I like Johnny Depp but I'm tired of seeing him as a quirky dark Burton-character.  I mostly blame the Pirates movies for that though.

Ryzee they're very good friends and they share the same brand of dark taste in movies. Depp said that he doesn't wait til he sees a script when Burton calls him up for a project.
alirocker08 That video is so unfair :lol Michael Keaton's career had nothing to do with Batman! He jumped ship when Burton did so he didn't work on the Batman Forever or Batman & Robin. Both Tim Burton Batman movies are untouchable classics in my book.

Hehe I know dude I was just being, how do you say?  Silly.

And yeah, Michael Keaton was Johnny Depp before Johnny Depp was Johnny Depp.  Case in point: Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns.

But Pee-Wee Herman was Timmy's original guy  :hat

Liam Neeson is a much better actor than Depp, and Seymour-Hoffman downright blows them both out of the water. Suffice it to say that Depp is not the greatest actor of our time. He's good though, just not good enough to be called that...

You need to see his amazing portrayal of a easily scare, schoolteacher in The Happening!!

Al Pacino, my all-time favourite.
Before Scent of a Woman, afterwards he's just being playing the same character over and over... kinda like Johnny Depp.

He's great. I would love to see him more often in non-Tim Burton movies though. I have nothing against Burton's movies, but they are not exactly my cup of tea. (at least no the last couple of movies)
