Has anyone else heard this gem? Seems like whenever Devin covers a song, it always ends up putting the original band to shame.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KRgqlRSVyg

Listening now, I'm already nervous for that last note, what is it, an A5 right? I so hope he hits it.

The Fall to your Knees is a lot cooler than the original.

Yeah he hits the right note in the end. Though the funny thing is, it sounds too effortlessly to me, too much falsetto (not that I wanna get into that discussion right now). I would've loved it if he screamed it out like the notes before.

Overall though, it's a great cover, really cool. It sounds 'old' too, instead of that they've tried to modernize it.

Just ordered the box-set. Really awesome stuff, sure it's expensive, but I think it's totally worth it at the same time. Now I have around ~60£ left on my account, which is supposed to last until I get money in 2 weeks.
I only use money for music related purchases almost, so I'm not that worried. Will probably be able to afford a vinyl and a few cds, and still have money left.

Devin's voice can handle pretty much anything. I think he's hit an F7 before (though it was very screechy). I'm more curious about who played the solo.

I've found a vocal range clip, and well, all of his high notes are screams. A couple of very well controlled ones, in terms of sound, but most of em are not controlled pitchwise, except for, well, the Exciter scream, which is magnificent for a scream, yes.

Dev's music doesn't suit high-ass singing unless it's screamed — i'm not super convinced he ends up doing that when he gets really high because he's unable to do it as a normal note, but rather that he chooses not to, much like he can wank the shit out of his guitar but very, very rarely does so in his music. it's something i like about his style (in both respects).

True, good point. I really think he has great ability, that's not the issue with Devin.

It constantly amazes me that he has such a sonorous clean voice to go with the screaming, and moreso that his voice hasn't collapsed in on itself from all the work Devin puts it through.

People were talking about his technique on the Devin Townsend forum, and apparently he sort of blends his modal voice with his non-modal voice when he screams. If you listen to the isolated Juular scream in that video, you can hear two distinct notes. But if you ask him, he'll tell you that he doesn't really have a technique. He just screams! He actually practiced it in a freezer when he was working at a restaurant.

He is just talking about the signed version that was available at his Official O Merch store. That is actually sold out now.
You can still get a signed version with a 7" vinyl of Coast at CM Distro and there will probably be a signed version sold at InsideOut Music's webstore when the boxset goes on sale there May 21st.

Non-signed version is available here for those in North and South America. https://www.cmdistro.com/Item/Devin_Townsend_-_By_A_Thread_-_Live_In_London_-5CD+4DVD-_-PRE-ORDER-/42119

There is also a signed version, with a 7" vinyl of Coast and an etching drawn by Devy on the B-side available here for $10 more. (Limited to 1000 copies worldwide)

Question: Where do you guys put Tiny Tears when compared to the rest of the songs on Terria?  And the rest of his songs in general?

Personally, I think it is the best song on Terria (which is saying A LOT) and is in the conversation of best Devin song ever.  The chanting section is just hypnotically godly.  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

It always placed last on Terria for me, but the last time I listened to the album, I enjoyed it a lot more for some reason. I always enjoyed the "C chord, to F chord, U2 chord, Resolve" part, and especially how he changes it to "Seaport, to airport." I usually zoned out during the rest of it. It didn't have one of those instantly epic parts that every other song on Terria has.

Now, I'd say it's about middle of the road for me.

Sure, but they aren't INSTANTLY epic. It took time for them to reveal their epicness to me.

Oh, and the solo in Nobody's Here completely rapes the Tiny Tears solo. The ending is just a normal fadeout. I usually just sit through it in anticipation of Stagnant.

Music that takes time to grow on you is almost always better than things that are instant grabbers.  It is why catchy pop songs often have little long term appeal, while slow growers have long lasting appeal.

I agree that the solo in Nobody's Here is awesome, too, but that doesn't take away from the awesomeness of the Tiny Tears solo.

And what does being a fadeout have to do with its epic ending?  That ending is epic as hell, fadeout or not.
