Ziltoid... is really good, but all five DTP albums, Terria, Infinity, Ocean Machine and Synchestra are all way better.

I think Ziltoid would be better if the concept were more easy to follow and more fully realized. It definitely had way more potential.

Ziltoid is low-tier Devin, imo.
I mostly agree. The songwriting just isn't as focused and creative. The Greys is awesome as all hell, and Color Your World is probably a top 20 Devin song too, but N9, Ziltoidia Attaxx, and By Your Command (come at me) are all sub-par.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I think Ziltoid suffers a bit from having a split personality. There's about three different types of album trying to get out of it - a comedy album, an SYL album and a career metaphor album.

There's some brilliant stuff on there, but it does meander a bit at times

I'd agree about N9, but I love Ziltoidia Attaxx and By Your Command. Some of the other songs on the album seem to stretch out a bit longer than is necessary, in my opinion.

Pretty much this. Which is why I look forward to Z2 anyway, he seems to be in a more comfortable place musically and is able to keep a project focused, as DTP proved.

I have no idea what happens in the story after Ziltoid meets with the Omni Dimensional Creator & before the guy wakes up in the coffee shop.

Okay, here's my brief rundown of the Ziltoid story.

ZTO: Ziltoid: "I am Ziltoid. Give me coffee or die, snot-eating hippie wart!"
By Your Command: Mostly told from what I believe to be the collective Ziltoidian army. The attack is imminent. The end is obviously by the human resistance.
Ziltoidia Attaxx: ATTTAAAAAAACK *SLIDE* DUGADUDU DUDU DUDU DUDUGADUDU DUDU DUDU
Solar Winds: Captain Spectacular reflects on his own existence and what he must do to stop Ziltoid.
Hyperdrive: I think this song is spoken by Captain Spectacular too because Devin uses a similar voice. It seems to be a love song, but it's also summarizing the trip during the hyperdrive before they land on Nebulo 9.
N9: The benevolent hivemind which rules over N9 (I think, I dunno) plants an idea in Ziltoid's head that he's basically worthless, crushing his ego.
Planet Smasher: Ziltoid's pissed and decides to proclaim his omniscience by destroying a planet. He is rejected by the Planet Smasher and his ego is depressed further.
Omnidimensional Creator: Ziltoid goes to the head of all existence asking what the meaning of his life is. "You gotta chill, man."
Color Your World: The omnidimensional creator warns Ziltoid that it's better for him not to know. After Ziltoid persuades, the creator tells Ziltoid that he is merely a puppet (in more ways than one, but for the purpose of the story he is a metaphorical puppet).
The Greys: Ziltoid's depression hits an all-time low. He is in fact a nerd.
Tall Latte: The story reaches its close and finds that the entire sequence was a dream by a lowly coffeehouse employee.

I've always thought of the story as a sort of allegory for a narcissist working in a corporate environment. I've also tried to justify it as an allegory for Devin's life as a musician, but that one falls apart pretty badly with the coffeehouse thing.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

in the liner notes it mentions something about Planet Smasher being some sort of arcade game or some shit. I dunno.

Which version of Hyperdrive! does everyone prefer ?

I think the version on Addicted! is a bit slicker.

This.

When I first got Addicted, I think I listened to Hyperdrive! 30 times in one day, and I rarely ever listen to a song that much.

Addicted easily. It has more energy and the sound is better. Not to mention Anneke, who's presence automatically improves any song.

I think it still works with the coffeehouse thing. I think of it like a lot of Terria, specifically Earth Day ("And after all you're just talking meat"). He's a musician and has a bunch of fans and all (Ziltoid) but in the end he's just a normal guy, no different than some lowly coffee shop worker.

Addicted! version has a more high energy vibe but the Ziltoid has Dev vocals. So I'm not to sure which to pick.

Am I the only one that feels the song could have used a guitar solo?

Playing Hyperdrive! A half step up made much more energetic and more as if your going in Hyperdrive. The Ziltoid version seems more laid back.

I have no idea what happens in the story after Ziltoid meets with the Omni Dimensional Creator & before the guy wakes up in the coffee shop.

Plot wise, nothing really. They're two career/life metaphor songs (along with Solar Winds and Hyperdrive, I reckon).

(This is just my theory. I have no idea how close or far away I am from the truth!)

"Tell me the true nature of my reality:" Which the last two songs do.

Colour Your World is, I believe, about Devin quitting being the Ziltoid alter-ego he portrayed during the 2000s to sell SYL and staying at home with his wife and kid to live a "normal" life instead. "I am a puppet" - that's how he felt about his career towards the end of SYL, whilst also being wonderfully literal about the Ziltoid puppet.

The Greys is about managing his bi-polar and its effect on his wife. The Greys isn't a reference to aliens, it's a reference to the depression parts of manic-depression.

I am completely in love with AE right now. I hadn't been all that into devy recently but for some reason I fell back in love with his music after hearing a friend play Storm right as we were watching an awesome actual storm come in. It was great, and it set me back into a devy addiction.  :millahhhh :metal

This, Thing Beyond Things and Bastard may be my favorite devy moments in his career.

So I have been on a major bonnerific Townsend kick recently. He's pretty much all I'm hearing when I'm listening to music. However...I haven't gotten into the newer stuff yet. The most I've heard is from Deconstruction and it was the track with Akerfeldt, which I loved so very much, but I'm about to buy the album on iTunes and I'm not sure what to expect given Devin's knack for changing his sound every album (in some capacity). I've heard Ghost is more mellow, and I'm gonna wait to listen to that till I experience his more brutal newer stuff. All that said...what's his most brutal, destructive music that is post-decon? I know nothing of any album after that aside from Ghost (which was kinda around the same time...I think?).

Anyway, I love this man; I missed falling asleep to the beautiful sounds he creates only to be awoken by some kind of musical shattering or immense scream.

Post-Decon? We just have Epicloud and Ghost and none of those are anywhere near as heavy and destructive as Deconstruction. Epicloud has a redo of Kingdom though, so that's kinda close. Both are awesome albums though, even if they're not very brutal.

Also, what's going on with Casualties? I remember seeing somewhere that he was done with it. Should we expect a release this year?

Well, there's only one real album and a collection of demos post-Decon (not counting Ghost), so there's not a lot of stuff to choose from, but I'd say that this is his heaviest since then, though I wouldn't exactly call it brutal, but it's still awesome. If you like Addicted, then I'd definitely check out Epicloud, though, it's got Anneke on the vocals again.

IIRC, it'll be coming out later this year or early next year. Z2 probably late next year if not later.
