How do you decompress after a stressful day?
« on: March 26, 2012, 03:51:40 PM »
I just gave a seminar to the department and while I didn't knock it out of the park, I didn't make a complete jackass out of myself.  I'm feeling pretty shitty about me performance, preparation, and myself in general.  My boss'es reassurances haven't done much, and I'm still full of pent up nervous energy and on edge; and usually nothing rattles me so being shaken like this is very unusual for me.  I've given talks to bigger names and more important people including Nobel Prize winners and I've completely owned the place, today I feel like I got my ass kicked by my peers.

I'm getting ready to go home, pick up dinner on the way (cause I'm not cooking), and then I need to figure out a way to come down.  I'll take any suggestions, although writing that seemed to help a little.   I'm just not used to this feeling.

I watch any kind of science related show. Usually Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe (both by Brian Kox) are on the top of the list. I have seen every episode at least 10 times and they never get old.

This may sound dumb, but it's kinda the equivalent of the stereotypical chick breakup therapy of eating an entire container of ice cream while watching a romantic comedy.  So here goes:  Since you're picking up food anyway, pick up whatever is your comfort food, stop by your nearest movie rental place (or if you can stream movies on Netflix or something, that's cool, too), and just pick up something mindless and fun, preferably with a lot of action, and just veg out.

My other option is to drum, loudly, and for a long time.  But if you don't play drums, that won't really work for you.

Sorry about the rough day, dude.

Like bosk said, veg in front of a TV with a bowl of ice cream.

And as you can see by my pictures, it works every time.

Seriously just relaxing with some tunes browsing the net, DTF, or watching tv does wonders.

But for me, I hit the gym and lift heavy.

Two beer when I get home.
But I can't decompress yet.
Stuff to do, the boy, after school, make lunches for next day, start supper, plans for the evening...etc etc.

My decompress later:

From 9:30--12:00

I shoot people online.  IT REALLY HELPS

no PS3 or XBOX...I have a Wii. James Bond Goldeneye, fantastic online shooter. Simple. Tricky.
I also have a list of pron sites I hit in between rounds

Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Actually, on a stressful day, I'll hang around work a bit to bitch it out with the rest of the staff, then stop by to visit my friend at another restaurant and chill a bit.  If it's really bad, then I go for junk food and some back episodes of Battlestar or DS9.  Don't have my old standby of a twelve pack and a bottle of Jager anymore. ::)

I usually opt for hitting the bong, drinking some whiskey and shooting some pixels (zombies are my current interest).  If it was a really bad day, Dr. Alprazolam might be invited, as well.

Other suggestions for people who aren't me: a walk around local parks is exceptional medicine for the soul; nature does wonders for the psyche.  Never discount the value of comfort food.

Most important, come to grips with the fact that we all have off days.  The best cure is realizing you're a dumbfuck for letting a trivial matter screw with your head.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

I took a co-workers advice and unloaded a few clips at the range.  That was a good start.  Now for dinner then I'll find something to do.

There are 2 things I do.

1) As Harry already stated you can kill shit in a videogame. That reliefs a lot of stress.

2) Go jogging. I find this to be the best since it helps me disconnect from the world, you relief all the stress you had and you are doing something good for your body.

- Usually a long bike ride (15+ miles) with my music or a long walk. I'll turn off my phone for a while, maybe have something to eat.

I love the Rocky movies more than any reasonable person should.  No matter how many times I've seen it, I still get emotional every time Rocky gets knocked down in the 14th.

I can't wait until I have a son, and on some snow day I'm going to break out the DVD's and have a Rocky marathon.

I didn't need cheering as much as I needed a release for that pent-up nervousness and energy.  I was kind of jittery until I unloaded a few clips at the shooting range, and then Rocky Balboa just kind of finished the job.  Tomorrow I can take all the pointers I got from my seminar to fix up my Ph.D. defense which is less than a month away and hopefully not make the same mistakes again.

That's it mate, and don't stress, giving speeches is impossible for me.  The fear of public speaking makes me shit my pants, it is by far my greatest fear, how anyone can do it regulary is beyond me.
