Disney expects $200 million loss on John Carter
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:54:37 PM »
https://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/20/entertainment-us-disney-carter-idUSBRE82I11E20120320

If it actually does reach this number, wouldn't that make it the biggest flop of all time?

Either way, between this and Mars Needs Moms from last year, that's a LOT of money down the drain.

Did Walt Disney piss off Mars, the god of war at some point in the past? If man ever colonized Mars, would it eject any Disney product back into space? That planet is like kryptonite to them.  :lol

Wow. I went to a press screening at Disney Studios before the release... Was a good (ish) movie... but they are / were aiming at the wrong demographics. It is like they are trying to please both children and adult men in one movie. Doesnt happen.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

That's weird. That movie has been the most watched here since it hit the theaters.

That's what you get from a non-descriptive name and zero marketing.

It seemed that they were intentionally trying to make it fail.

The name is bad, yes. I recall seeing plenty of commercials for it, though.

The TV commercials for that movie are like repelant.  I don't think I'd go watch it given a free ticket.

Feel bad for Taylor Kitsch, who seems like a genuinely good guy. I hope this doesn't hurt his career too much.

It shouldn't effect the actors.  Sean Connery made Zardoz and still had a successful acting career.

Sean Connery has one of the most amazing accents. That alone probably got him a couple of parts.

Same here, and there have been absolutely tons of adverts. I can only assume they spent a ludicrous amount making it.

They spent nearly 300 million on the film and have made back only about 100 million.

Internationally, by the time it leaves theaters, it'll make a bit more. Then you'll have DVD/blu-ray to bring in more scratch. By the end of it, it won't be a big of a flop as some would perceive. The problem is that it wasn't the hit they were hoping for. Green Lantern suffered the same fate.

The other thing we have to keep in mind is that the $250 million budget doesn't include what they spent on advertising.

To me, this movie looks okay. Probably not spectacularly bad or anything. I'm certainly not rushing out to see it though.

It seems a bit crazy to me to risk putting so much money into a movie that isn't more or less guaranteed to make it back. Shit like Spiderman or Lord of the Rings or the latest animated movie the kids are gonna flock to in the holidays, okay, you can spend as much as you like and know you've got a safe audience that is gonna come and see it. Spending 250-300 mil on something like this though seems like it's asking for trouble.

Hopefully, Finding Nemo and Wall-E will keep Andrew Stanton's reputation from being destroyed.

Not a bad movie, just not enough hype surrounding it.  The trailer didn't help it either.

Well, they need to stay off Mars that for sure. Perhaps they should branch out to Uranus or Neptune. I just love a good, gas ball planet adventure!

I don't get it.

But yeah I don't think "John Carter" is a name that many people except hardcore early sci-fi nerds would know, and I have seen almost zero advertising for this thing, so yeah, I can see why its losing money.

Are you serious? Prior to release the advertising on this thing was absolutely insane, it was fucking everywhere.
