The Motels - Only the Lonely

Nice little song, featuring some nice-sounding 80s synths.

Nothing really to add beyond that.  Didn't hate it.  Didn't love it.  It was just a slice of typical, everyday '80s that was there.

Phil Collins - Two Hearts

While I found the vast majority of his latter 80s hits fairly crappy, even back then at the time, I did like this one a lot.  It was catchy, and the video was entertaining, featuring Collins playing every instrument, albeit with wigs, bad clothes and dorky glasses. :lol  The song is still catchy enough for me to enjoy it when it comes on, although I never go out of my way to hear it.

Phil had a minor obsession with Motown music, which sometimes resulted in some good stuff.  This one's a bit cheesy, but I guess it's okay.  It's a nice, happy song.

Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart of Rock & Roll

This is the only major hit from Sports I haven't featured yet, so here it is.  I loved most of the other hits from this record, but this was one I thought was just okay.  Plus, the video wasn't as fun or creative as the others from the same album.

Huey and Phil are both pure, unadulterated win.

The Motels - Only the Lonely

Eh.  Was never a fan of it.

Phil Collins - Two Hearts

Yick. *insert _floyd's puking emote here*

Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart of Rock & Roll

I respectfully disagree with Mister Shmev's opinion of this one - I've always LOVED this song.  So much so that it's probably my favorite of the hits from Sports.  The video was pretty entertaining too, from what I remember.

Carly Simon - Let the River Run

This is another one of those 80s songs that is impossible to not associate it with the movie it was from, in this case, Working Girl.  This apparently was a pretty big hit, but I didn't really know it until I caught the movie on cable TV years later, as MTV either didn't play it much or I simply tuned it out when it came out and didn't remember it.  It's not a bad song, but I can't imagine going out of my way to hear it.

From what I remember this was an okay enough song but... I'm more of a fan of her older music to be honest.

I didn't think this song existed outside of the movie, and honestly wondered why it had such a bombastic chorus. Bordering on pretentious, actually.  :lol

Peter Gabriel - Big Time

This was my favorite song of his back in the 80s.  It wasn't as popular as Sledgehammer, but I always thought it was better, and the video is just as good.  That bass line of Tony Levin's is :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Yeah, I definitely liked this one more than Sledgehammer.  Really great blend of pop and prog.

I wasn't a Peter Grabriel fan at all (still not a fan), but still a great song and cool video.

I spent months after this song came out saying HI THERE like Peter Gabriel does at the start of this song.

Sorry, that's all I got, I used up my story telling quota over in the Styx thread.  :rollin

Big Time is definitely a more fun song than Sledgehammer.  And I think I enjoy it more.  Sledgehammer is one of those songs that was made more popular by its video, in the era when that happened.  Like Money For Nothing (a good, not great, song, made into a mega-hit by a good video.)

But anyway, yeah, Big Time deserves more love.

"Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" are both great, and Nick Park's claymation videos were awesome.  Win + Win.

I didn't know until now that the bass line was produced by having Tony fret the notes and having then drummer Jarry Marotta hit the strings with drumsticks.  Wow.

The Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line

Like Handle with Care, I absolutely loved this song when it was out, and I still do.  It's catchy as hell, has a great pace and I love how they rotate vocalists, a different guy doing each verse, Petty doing the choruses while the others do the harmonies, and then finally them rotating on the final verse.  Great, great song!!

Back then, I didn't like it and didn't like the band, primarily because of Orbison.  I might have to check it out again.  I have a feeling I might feel completely differently about it now.

At the end of jr high, our principle put together a slideshow of pictures he took that year and played it to some songs. This was one of them. It was very touching, I still think of that today when I hear this song.

I grew to like this album later, but as I've mentioned before, during my tenure as a seasonal employee at a local record store, it was one of only three officially sanctioned albums that the manager allowed us to play, and while I breathed a sigh of relief when it would come on-the other two were something by Anita Baker and Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel, neither of which were my thing-hearing it every day at work wore it out QUICK.

I'm kinda surprised that you guys don't like Roy Orbison.  I guess his voice IS kind of an acquired taste, but I've always loved it.  I have this disc from 1987 that's basically a 19-songs Orbison "best of" where he completely re-recorded all of the songs.  One of my favorite albums, still.  That recording of Blue Bayou is amazing, not to mention the duet with k.d. lang on Cryin' from the movie Hiding Out.

YES! :heart

Roy O did have a VERY distinctive voice, but he was truly one of a kind.  He was originally from Texas too. :coolio

Jeez, I didn't think it was possible to not love Roy Orbison's voice.  ???  Speaking of which...

Roy Orbison - You Got It

Really nice song, one that was released after his death, so I am sure part of its success was due to that, but it was still a really good song, and the video received extensive airplay on MTV.  You can really hear the influence of having worked with Jeff Lynne in the music (Lynne being a co-writer and the producer).

Soon as I read the song, I heard the tympani part from the chorus.

Roy Orbison - You Got It

Love it.  It's pretty cool that just about anything Jeff Lynne co-writes/produces turns into gold, but has problems getting that same reaction for anything remotely related to ELO (not the older stuff, I'm talking about what he's tried to put together in about the last 5 years or so).
