Yeah, they weren't afraid to mess with the norms, which was something cool about them.

I like that too. Both Africa and Roseanna were/are popular, and they both had keyboard solos in them. And they both fit the song so well, and don't detract from the pop appeal of them imo.

Rosanna WAS a great song but... it just got too much airplay.

Chicago - Look Away

Most of Chicago's 80 ballads/softer hits absolutely reeked of some of the worst cheese ever, but this one was actually pretty good.  Maybe it was the change of lead singers that made it seem a little less cheesy; hard to say.  I do know that the shot near the end of the video where the gal comes out of the elevator was great.  She goes into an elevator full of men in her swimsuit, changes in there, and when she exits the elevator fully-clothed, leaving the men in there in a sweat, she gives this little smile and look to the camera which was awesome.  That little moment was probably why I liked the song in the first place. :lol

Like the song but like most I do love the older Chicago.  Though that album had so many hits and great hooks.  The lack of horns is what I didn't like

Oh dear. I said this elsewhere, but Chicago around this period was the only Chicago I was familiar with at the time. And it seemed like every one of their songs was about getting kicked in the nuts to the curb by your girlfriend, which, to 14 year old Cool Chris, was the most tragic thing I could imagine. I had to have spent hours listening to their Greatest Hits CD 82-89, lamenting over my most recent break-up.

Oh yeah, if you were hit by heartbreak in the 80s, you played Chicago. A LOT.  :lol

David Lee Roth - Just a Gigolo (I Ain't Got Nobody)

While maybe not the best song out of his 80s hits (it being a mash of two covers), this was by far, IMO, the best video DLR the solo artist ever did.  He had everything that screamed 80s videos: girls, humor, excess, everything.  And the moment where he goes through a long spiel of what-the-hell ever words vocally is still LOL (at 4:29 in the link below, just before the Billy Idol parody).  Certain videos just define the 80s; this is one of them. :hat

I loved this video, and by extension, this song, before I even knew what a gigalo was. I can't imagine listening to this song for more than 5 seconds now, but will watch this video first thing when I get home tonight.

The music video is classic DLR, and classic '80s, and I love all of the references. Being an old cover rather than a typical DLR tune, I don't love the song, but I do still like it. I rarely listen to it though.

A lot of songs are inextricably linked to their videos and always will be, and this is probably one of them.  Also, this may have been one of the songs/videos that pushed me towards watching TV with the sound muted, which is now my norm.  Listen to stuff I actually like, meanwhile watch TV and check out the babes.  Best of both worlds.  To this day, there are videos I've seen many times but have never actually heard the songs.

Chicago were never really popular here in Aus, so I'm actually not that familar with them.  Should check them out, what I have heard was okay.

Madonna - Like a Virgin

Easily one of her most defining songs of her career.  I thought it was catchy enough when it first came out, but I wasn't a big fan.  I thought many of her hits in the 80s were better.

Every time I hear this song I think of the part of Reservoir Dogs where Quentin Tarantino explains what the song is really about, and then how Steve Buscemi's character refuses to tip on general principle.

Mötley Crüe - Wild Side

This video was noteworthy because it featured the spinning drum set of Tommy Lee; I remember that being a big thing.  I was not really a big fan of this band, like a lot of people my age were, but I did like this song a lot.  And it has held up as one of their best hits of the time period.

Not my favorite from that album, or in general.

Mötley Crüe - Wild Side

As much as I dug this song back in the day, I saw Crue on the GGG tour and I have to be honest - Whitesnake (their opener) blew the Crue AWAY.

Yeah, I saw them at the Day On The Green show on that tour, and Whitesnake, Poison, and Jetboy ALL blew Crue away.  :lol

But as far as the song, yeah, don't care for it.

Great Crue song. Aside from the spinning drum kit, the music video was just phoned in concert footage, and not one of their particularly memorable ones (I mean come on, no girls in cages or classrooms?)

I don't think it was too hard to blow the Crue away on that tour. :lol
