I like The Police a lot, but they tend to have some popular songs that annoy me:

-Roxanne is just plain awful.  That is number 1 on my list of "Rock songs I can't believe are so popular."
-Message in a Bottle is good, but the constant "Sending out an S.O.S." at the end of the song over and over and over and over and over... is annoying as hell.

Personally I can't stand Every Breath You Take. One of those songs I can't understand why it became a hit.

Many people also seem to mistake it for a love song, when it's actually about a stalker.

Bingo!  As far as Roxanne goes, I can NOT hear that without picturing/hearing Eddie Murphy from Another 48 Hours.

I disagree about Roxanne, but I loathe Message in a Bottle, for what it's worth.

I hated "Every Breath...." when it was popular, but as the years have gone by the song has become better and better.

I don't care for "Roxanne" either.

My favorite Police song is "Spirits in the Material World".  That song is awesome.

This discussion is a good segue way into the next song...

Sting - Be Still My Beating Heart

Another mellow tune, I don't have enough words to express my love for this song.  I loved it to death in 1987, and I still do.  I love the echo/reverb on Sting's voice throughout much of the song, which gives the song an even more ethereal feel that the music had already given it.  I wasn't a big fan of a lot of Sting's solo work, although I respect him for trying a lot of different things, instead of just sticking with the rock genre, but with this song, he didn't just hit a home run, he slammed it out of the zip code!

Basically this. I remember liking "Fortress Around Your Heart", but "Be Still My Beating Heart" doesn't even resonate in my head. I will have to youtube/spotify.

I don't know why I never cared for Sting much. Not sure what this means, but the thing I associate with him the most is "Dune."

Great song of an average album.  I cannot say enough about Ten Summoners Tales though.  Top to bottom a perfect album.

vinnie colaiuta's work on TST is one of my greatest drumming inspirations.

But as much as i love that album, I'm not sure that NLTS is any less great.

Saw the TST tour with Dada opening up.  One of my top 10 shows of all time.  Vinny blew me away.  Hell, the whole band did!

Yeah, don't take it the wrong way Dean.  This thread would be chaos if we all contributed, so, as the thread originator, Kev - who semmingly has an endless supply (and love I suspect) of 80s tunes -  is the one proposing the tunes.

Haha, that is a funny way to put it. :tup :tup

What is scary is that I still have around 275 80s songs that I have yet to feature in this thread. :eek :eek :eek

One of them is:

J. Geils Band - Centerfold

An insanely catchy song, one I enjoyed as a kid, but it does pretty much nothing for me now.  I don't remember the video being noteworthy at all, either.

+1

I always liked his work in The Police so much more. This is the only album that comes close but on a completely different level. Saw him on that tour too and the band was killer.

Back to topic: J. Geils Band - Centerfold

Catchy, but didn't age that well with me. Don't remember the video either.

Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Like a lot of 80s songs, it was ok for the time, but certainly wouldn't be my cup of tea nowadays.  If not for the nostalgic factor, it'd be a big bucket of 'blah'.  Nostalgic-wise, it's slightly better than ok.

I remember that everyone thought MTv Veejay Martha Quinn was one of the girls in the video.

The cute brunette did look a lot like Martha, but it wasn't her.  If anything, the girl in the video was even cuter than Martha, which I know is hard to believe, but it's true.

Well there was also the fact that, if memory serves, Martha Quinn was a teenager when MTV launched.  :lol Doubtful she would be running around in lingerie in a music video.
