Okay I got to the chorus and remembered which song it was.  :lol

Still, the fact that I had forgotten it probably suggests how generic 80s pop I found the song to be.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Starship - We Built This City

Complete and utter shit.  I hated this song back then, and I hate it now.  There is nothing appealing about this piece of shit song.

Made no. 1 on Vh1's worst 50 songs of all time. Biggest sell out song in rock history. They went from counter culture icons to lyrics like"someone's always playing, corporation games." Such a sad demise.

Remember AGES back in this thread when I said Heart going to outside writers was very probably the best move they could have made at the time?

Meet the antithesis of that argument. Sure, it was a hit, but this kind of processed plastic pop was the purview of one hit wonders, not the band who had a lineage going back to White Rabbit and 60s psychedelia.

Agreed, too.  Okay, on to something better (which isn't hard)...

Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance

A rather corny song, with an even sillier video, yet it is catchy enough to still enjoy on occasion.  A girl friend of mine from years ago used to love singing the spelled out beginning of the song (that was edited out in the single version), just to be silly and get us talking about the 80s; she was funny. :lol

Yeah... Beavis and Butthead ripped on it back during their first run, but I've always kinda liked it.  It's quite catchy, but you have to admit that the video IS a bit silly.

Utterly silly song, but WOW is it catchy as hell.

In fact just reading about it gets it stuck in my head!

First time I heard this song was on the radio, and it was a completely different version than the version of the song in the video.  The radio cut was more new-wavey and had a synth hook line that's nowhere to be found in the video version.  The video version is more melodic and has the cute silly girl being cute and silly.

I know this is not today's song but the Irony of the above statement is that the lyrics to Heart's "These Dreams" and Starship's "We Built This City" were both written by Bernie Taupin.

Bernie Taupin wrote some incredible lyrics in his day.  Obviously he wrote the lyrics to the vast majority of Elton John's songs, but for some reason, it never occurred to me that he'd worked with other artists.  Silly me.

Anyway, the key here is that the lyrics to "These Dreams" and "We Built This City" are neither inherently good nor bad.  It's the way they're set to the music that makes or breaks them.  I personally like "These Dreams" but find "We Built This City" to be so cheesy that you could actually slice it up and put it on sandwiches.  That's not the fault of the lyrics, though.  Set it to metal or anything with balls and you could make it work.

Back to WBTC for a moment.  The extended club remix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h12Lmvyvb3c

From the comments:

Quote
About a month ago I ate an entire bag of Juanita's corn chips. I don't know how it happened, they were there, then they were gone. I felt sick. But what I didn't know is that I had a stomach flu coming on. Two hours later, I was yakking up that bag of Juanita's. A fire hose of corn and grease and stomach acid. I can still taste it.

Now when I see a bag of Juanita's I gag a little and, I'm not making this up, I have to stop myself from crying. Which is exactly how this song makes me feel.

That said, Safety Dance is excellent.

having said all of this, the song stilled reached number one and the band received a Grammy nomination for it (not that that means anything).

Man, I haven’t heard this song in ages. I will have to spotify it when I get home. I recall liking it when I was a wee lad, before my tastes developed and all that. And of course I thought this was just a new band that came out of nowhere.

Safety Dance to me is one of those songs that sounds great when it first comes on (catchy tune, fun lyrics), but then after a minute or so I am ready to move on. It also isn’t quite fast or upbeat enough to dance to like a lot of other similar 80s songs.

Oddly, that sums up A LOT of 80s songs for me.  I can put my 80s CD on in the car and get through about eight songs in a 15-minute drive. :lol

After the Fire - Der Kommissar

Definitely a classic 80s tune, this is one I will almost listen to from start to finish!  The video definitely freaked me out a tad, as a kid, though, with that damn spider crawling around and such. :eek :eek

I thought it was weird how Falco had a song called "Der Kommissar" and then it was maybe six months later that After the Fire released an English-language version of the same song.  I guess they figured not many people would know Falco's original version of the song.  Personally, I prefer Falco's version.  The video isn't as good, but it has the virtue of being simple.  Falco said he thought American videos were too complicated, trying too hard or something.  Of course, we looked at the European videos and thought they were silly and lame, so there you go.

The Falco version is definitely cool. He had the ability to turn mediocre songs into listenable hits.

The scary thing is, I made a separate playlist in iTunes (I simply copy and pasted my normal 80s playlist into another one and called it DTF 80s) and have been deleting each song from it as I feature it here...and I still have nearly 400 songs left! :eek :eek So, this thread could still go on for a loooooong time. :coolio

Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

Loved this video like crazy when it was out. I remember there was a time period where MTV was playing at at 7 p.m. (CT) on the button every weeknight for weeks, so if I was home, the MTV was going on before 7 so I wouldn't miss it, since, ya know, we didn't even have a VCR yet! :lol  And I obviously had no clue at the time that the video and even several comments in the song were a nod to Animal House, since I didn't see that movie till I was like 18 or 19. But it made the video even more awesome once I knew all of that.
