reckoning night last!? That one is far and away my favourite SA album.

RN is overrated.
I don't think it's overrated but it just has less highlights than the other albums.

I only have their most recent album, and my favorite song on it is "Flag In The Ground."  I get the sense from reading about the new album that that song has a little more of their "old school" sound, i.e. traditional power metal.  One, I was wondering if this assumption is correct, and two, if so, which of their previous albums have a similar sound.

First, you should kno that the song Flag in the Ground is actually one of the first songs they wrote. It was intended to be a special bonus track for the fans, but the label decided it would make for a good single.

Ecliptica and Silence are the closest to that style. Silence is more focused, though.

The DVD show has been postponed for this tour :omg:

Quote
SONATA ARCTICA regret to inform their Italian fans that the announced show in Milan at the Alcatraz on September 30th, 2010 needs to be postponed.
Reason: while doing his daily exercise routine Elias Viljanen (guitar) broke his right hand. Due to this accident he will not be able to play guitar for the next 5 or 6 weeks.
The new date for the show will be now Sunday, February 27th, 2011 also at the Alcatraz. Of course all tickets for the show September 30th remain valid for the new date.

Sonata Arctica comment:
"It was pretty shocking to hear from Elias about his accident. We are really sorry we need to postpone the show to a later date and want to excuse for any inconveniences this might cause to our fans in Italy and to all fans who had made travel plans from around the world. We really hope to see you all again in February at the Alcatraz".

I like Elias, but I really think they have lost a lot of their flair since Jani has left.  His absence really is felt IMO, a certain flair isn't there any more.  Still love them though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I was actually watching their DVD last night and Jani really was a pleasure to watch, an amazing, energetic performer.  Elias doesn't even come close.

I haven't seen SA live with Jani (I only have For the Sake of Revenge DVD) but I've seen them with Elias and he's a great replacement. He had a solo spot at one point and he really did play well!

I am not saying anything about his guitar playing, he's an amazing guitar player, he just doesn't have that spark that Jani had IMO.

Well, I understand why someone may prefer Jani to Elias. Jani played with SA on 5 albums and sometimes contributed to the songwriting so he was an important member. But I think Elias is equally good. I don't understand why some people blame him for the "suckiness" of TDOG, Tony wrote all those songs, he has always written 99 % of their music.

I don't think it's because Jani was on 5 albums, I just think he was an extra personality that really gave the band a stronger image, he just has a louder personality than Elias.

And yes I blame Tony 100% for The Days of Gays, horrible album.  He found perfection with Unia but then it seems he wasn't satisfied with the direction and changed it even more for the worse.

I prefer they keep making something different to them making Unia all over again, amazing album as it may be.
Surely one day they'll work out it would be simpler and far more legal just to suckle on each others' teats in a kind of wonderful 69 of eternal calcium goodness.
