While I disagree, I can see where you're coming from maybe in some instances. But to say they're cheesy on the whole is just wrong.

I don't see how the vocals are cheesy. Tony has a great voice and does not just wail in falsetto all day, he sings melodious lines. The lyrics for the most part are above average if anything. Not amazing, but certainly not all that embarrassing. Sometimes they have funny lyrics, but then you have to remember that they're a fun loving band that started out with the name Tricky Beans.

That seems like a fair enough counterargument. I'm only really basing my accusation on about six or seven tracks, so I can't really fairly judge their entire discography. I'll check them out again at some point and know what to expect more.

I'm in a similar place to Marvellous G, I've listened to a few songs and find them a bit too cheesy for my liking. I actually really like the singer, it's the music itself that's a bit cheesy. I'm not meaning to bash them or anything it's just my initial impression. I'll keep listening to give them a fair chance  :D

If you're talking about Letter to Dana and that shit, yeah, but I don't find the later stuff (last 2 albums particularly) that cheesy.

After seeing them in concert for a second time now (last night), I'd have to say Full Moon is one of the best live songs in existence.

SONATA ARCTICA are extremely excited to announce their upcoming recording of their second DVD which will take place at the ALCATRAZ in Milan, Italy on September 30th, 2010.
SONATA ARCTICA will perform a pretty unique show of at least 120 minutes. Next to songs of their latest albums “The Days Of Grays” and “Unia” they also will perform some of the older songs from previous albums plus some very rare songs they didn’t play live during the last years. For sure this will be an unforgettable event and a journey from the beginning of their career as one of the most popular Finish metal bands until now - you definitely shouldn’t miss it.

The DVD will be released in spring 2011 (tba) thru Nuclear Blast records and Marquee Inc. in Japan and will, next to the show in Milan, contain another show, recorded 2009 during the SONATA ARCTICA Open Air Festival in their hometown Kemi, Finland. And of course there will be massive bonus material such as “The Making Of”, interviews, and plenty of video footage the band recorded the last few years during their career on tour.

This thread deserves to be bumped! Sonata Arctica is a really good band! I've seen them live once and they were amazing! My favourite album from them is probably The Days of Grays.

You know, I didn't think so for a long time, but every time I think about Unia I seem to hold it in my mind as their best album. I may listen to it again soon. It is definitely a unique album.

Unia > tDoG (imo)

It isn't really as comparable to their other records though, but still, one of their best efforts.

Honestly, that album was such a shock to the fanbase. Ever since even Winterheart's Guild you could find traces of progressive styles in their music. Reckoning Night made it more obvious, but Unia is a whole world of music within itself.

Unia is fucking great. There's some few songs I don't like (For The Sake Of Revenge, Good Enough Was Good Enough), but there's some great, under-appreciated songs (The Harvest, The Vice, Caleb)

The Days of Grays was extremely underwhelming. It grew on me a bit but Unia was just much better.

Not sure enough people listen to the band here to run one, but I'd participate. You might ask Sonatafanica if he wants to run it :P

It's not hard, I'm sure you can figure it out :)  I'd participate in a SA survivor - I own all the albums.

BTW, can you drop the "spring tour dates announced" part of your original post, so it looks like THE SA thread, and not a tour thread...might get more traffic to the thread.
