First Michael Jackson, now THIS? WTF
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:55:59 PM »
I mean, seriously?  I'm not trying to be insensitive.  I've been defending Whitney Houston all night on Facebook to "who cares, she was a crackhead anyway" morons.... but, what a frigging time for this to happen.  Even if DT does win the Grammy - will anyone really care?  We're going to be hearing about this for weeks.  Ugh.
Now that Obama has closed Gitmo, when will he turn his attention to the abuses and torturing of the onions that are used to make the angry whopper?

How dare Whitney Houston die when DT's nominated for a Grammy?

She's dead and moved on, that sucks for her family and fans. I'm not going to pretend to be all choked up about her death because I don't know her very well. Her music has never done anything for me and she died to her own foolish devices. A somewhat educated, wealthy/successful performer decides to destroy herself? My sympathy to her friends, family and her fans. One thing I do respect that I know of is she rose to fame without portraying herself as a sex symbol.  :hefdaddy

Seriously, people, get off your high horses.  There's nothing wrong with what I said.  Of course, her death is terrible.  My point is that this is the second time that DT's career has been affected by another major celebrity's death and I think that sucks, too.  The death sucks MORE, but it must suck for DT that this happened right before what was supposed to be a big night for them.

I can guarantee you, DT is sure as hell not worried about how this affects their "big night".

Maybe it's just me, but Whitney Houston is nowhere near the same scale as Michael Jackson dying. They will probably have a moment of silence at the Grammys, and then business as usual.

Besides, how did MJ's death affect DT? I know Farah Fawcett got screwed over, but them?

There actually will be a tribute performance to Whitney Houston at the Grammys today.

Michael Jackson's death caused DT to "only" be #6 back in 2009.  A lot of people said they would have charted higher, but Jackson's death caused a bit of a surge in his record sales the same week Black Clouds came out.

And, I can guarantee you that DT IS worried about their big night because IT'S ONLY THE BIGGEST NIGHT OF THEIR CAREER.  I mean, seriously.  I've never heard any members of DT (or anyone on this forum) talk about what big Whitney Houston fans they are, so why people are suddenly offended is a mystery.

This is a DT forum and DT is nominated for a Grammy.  Sorry, but this IS a major event that DOES affect the Grammys.  I apologize for if my first post seemed insensitive toward Whitney Houston - it was not meant that way.

Jackson's death affected them because of the charts. How does Whitney Houston's death actually impact them at all?
Their award isn't being televised anyway. Whether they win the Grammy or not has nothing at all to do with Whitney Houston. And whether people care about DT's award also has nothing to do with Whitney Houston. People either would have cared, or wouldn't have cared, and this won't change that for anyone.
The only thing this means for DT is that as they sit at the Grammys they'll probably have to watch a short tribute video.

I'm actually not seeing the issue here. I think we're more confused than offended.

Dunno dude, I think you're making too much out of this. An artist who many already figured dead died now. That tribute performance will be that, they're not gonna make this a Whitney Houston Grammy Award.
Besides, in all likelihood DT's "big moment" will be those 5 seconds of the song they play so that not everybody in audience asks "what the fuck is a Cream Theater?"

I don't get how it affects the Grammy's but I find it funny that when a big event happens in DT-World, a few days before an important music figure dies

I think that's the point of the thread.

I guess DT may not be able to have any more mainstream success, because people have to die. That explains a lot, actually...

LOL .... yeah.

And, yeah, you're right - that was kind of my point of what I was saying.  Even if DT didn't end up getting the Grammy, a lot of times, the other nominees get discussed on the radio or on music shows and all that kind of stuff.  I just think that Whitney Houston's death is going to steamroll everything for days or weeks.  I just felt a little bad for the guys that they had to go into the Grammy's - the biggest night of the career - with this tragic event happening, just like they went into their first top 10 charting on the Billboard with Jackson dying.

edit..

If I were in a band that got nominated for my first Grammy after 25 years of getting ignored by the mainstream and working my ass off and this happened, I'd be a little bummed out knowing everyone there will be talking about that person (an icon in pop music) and not really caring about my band.

Michael Jackson died. A child molester gone. No biggie. Now Whitney. Sad, but junkies die.  What's the surprise? May she have peace now. Doen't affect DT in the least.

I guess I understand sorta, but really Whitney has nothing to do with the Grammy's, and I don't think DT is all that worried about attention (well maybe when they had MP).

Saying that Whitney Houston has "nothing to do with the Grammys" is kind of ridiculous.

The 28th Grammy Awards

Album of the Year    Nominated  "Saving All My Love for You"
Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female    Won
"You Give Good Love" Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female Nominated
Best R&B Song  Nominated

The 29th Grammy Awards    "Greatest Love of All"    Record of the Year    Nominated

The 30th Grammy Awards
Album of the Year    Nominated
"Didn't We Almost Have It All"    Song of the Year Nominated
"I Wanna Dance with Somebody
(Who Loves Me)"
Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female    Won
"For the Love of You"    Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female    Nominated

The 31st Grammy Awards    "One Moment in Time"    Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Nominated

There's more.  Do I really need to copy and paste all of them?

Never mind, forget I said anything.

That's not cool to abandon what you said. Stand firm on your convictions as anything less is unbecoming. You'll piss people off, you'll have people agreeing with you and some in between. All of that doesn't matter as long as you stay firm in your beliefs. If someone else has an opinion that differs from yours, just be cool about it. I might not agree with you but I'm not going to be an asshole and belittle you for it (Not saying you did). That seems to be where issues start, aye?

Back on topic, I think everything has the potential to instigate change. Peoples disposition changes, instigating alternate thought that leads to something suggested verbally differently than what would have been thought or said if she didn't die, thus having the potential to change from an original route before the modifier (Whitneys death). Will DT get less attention or more attention? Who knows and no one will ever be able to tell because there will be no point of reference to compare if the Grammys were to take place without the death of Whitney Houston. Based on that logic, its a safe bet that something will change but it's not going to have any sort of negative impact for the band imo.
