Common Misconceptions
« on: February 07, 2012, 04:40:44 PM »
There are a lot of little sayings or commonly accepted things that just flat out aren't true (like people only use 10% of their brains). I love hearing about these, so let's better educate the DTF community by posting some of our favorite (or most hated) misconceptions. Go!

1. Seasons are caused by the Earth's changing distance from the sun as it travels around its elliptical orbit. Nope. It's from the difference between more and less direct sunlight caused by the tilt in the Earth's axis. The actual change in the Earth's distance from the sun doesn't do much at all.

I didn't ruin anything. Now this thread has served its purpose and we can move on to discussing more important things, like global warming, or boobs.

3. That chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons are monkeys. They're apes, but it seems that 99.9999999% of the time people see a chimp, they call it a monkey. For some reason, this is like my biggest pet peeve because I like animals a lot and this mistake is so widespread. We should at least be able to identify our closest animal relatives!
WHOA, NICE GRAPHICS!

People don't seem to know how to use the word "irony" properly, which drives me nuts.

It is a myth that one is able to skate on ice because the pressure on the ice by the blades lowers the freezing point of the ice to the point of melting. What actually happens is that ice has a minuscule film of stuff that is both liquid and solid at the same tine, and that's what you glide on.

I totally came in here to post this. Thank you so much! I'm so tired of people either being too lazy to look it up, thinking it's a synonym for coincidental, or knowing the difference but choosing to say the wrong word any way because they think it sounds cooler/more intellectual/whatever.

I already made that hideous thread.

And along the lines of ironic, per se doesn't mean what most people think it does either.

You could fill a thread solely with misconceptions about global warming and boobs.

It was also a blatant money grab by James Cameron. (not a misconception).

Fact: Boobs, if we learned to harvest their power, could reverse global warming.
