I'm so confused.  First, I learned it was 1.  Then it was 2.  Now it's back to 1.  But I don't care.  2 spaces is much cleaner.  :coolio

As many as I want. FIGHT THE POWER!

(I think it's gone back to 1, though. Sometimes it's been 2. This confuses me. )

Gadough

I've written essays with 1 space after, and I've written some with 2 spaces after. No teacher I've had throughout high school or college has ever shown a preference for one or the other. They've never even mentioned it. I don't think it matters as much as some people think.

Chicago Style Manual says 1.  All other commonly used style manuals, as far as I am aware, say 2.

I've only ever been aware that 2 was correct, but seeing that it's split I'd say both are acceptable, just be consistant with it.

I was taught to use 2 spaces, but I use 1 since I'm such a Rebel. Take that society.

I thought two was the "proper" way, but on the internet I always use one.

Jaffa

I was taught 2 in elementary school, and wasn't aware that it was taught differently anywhere else.  Learned something new today, thanks.

I think 2 spaces allows each sentence to be quickly grasped...with 1 space, everything is cluttered.

YET YOU DIDN'T USE ANY SPACE AT ALL!!!!!!!11

Jaffa

That was an ellipsis, not a period.

Still grammatically incorrect, of course.  Just clarifying.

That ellipsis was used in the middle of the sentence, so no space was needed.

Jaffa

When an ellipsis is used to omit a section from a quote, no space is needed.  But when it is used to indicate a pause, it requires a space.

That's how I've always done it, anyway.  I'm probably completely wrong.

Always used 1 up here in Canada. 1 for the win, eh?

But you also say "zed", and have two official languages, so I don't really put much stock in Canadians opinions on English :)

black_biff_stadler

"Zee" was a creation on the American dialect of English as far as I know.

Dr. DTVT

I don't see any "Vancouver Style Guides" or "Canadian Style Guides".  There are however, Chicago, and American.
