This is the way it has always been done. No matter how it's done people will bitch because albums they like didn't make it to a further round.

A lot of mine did, but to jump from 181 to 10 is way to big of a jump, and doesn't really lend itself to the idea that it's a "competition"

Wow, you apparently have a warped view of what a competition is.

You know many things don't even have a playoff type thing were top teams or whatever move on, in which case this whole thing could have just been done in a single round.

Apparently you have no idea what suspense is, nobody's actually interested for the most part because it just ends like that, and it doesn't give people a chance to really think about their choices.
