What album should I buy next?
« on: February 08, 2012, 07:40:25 PM »
I've listened to every Dream Theater album except for WDADU, SFAM and ACOS if that counts. I don't want to listen to everything at once so I space out how many albums I listen to at one time (weird I know >_>). So which should I listen to next? I kinda didn't want to listen to WDADU since it doesn't have Labrie as the vocalist, but I'll get over that fact and SFAM is regarded by some as their best so I wanted to save it for last. If it helps here's my album rankings:

1. Awake (took me a while to get into, but once it clicked.. oh man)
2. Octavarium (gets too much hate :( )
3. I&W
4. 6DoIT
5. Train of Thought
6. BC&SL
7. ADToE
8. Falling into Infinity
9. Systematic Chaos (even though I rank it the lowest I still think it's a great album)

Also how's Labrie in Budokan? I have Score already (didn't listen to the SFAM song in there as to not spoil myself) and I'd like to get a new live album as well.

ACOS is awesome, though the rest of the EP are covers (not bad, but I mean, eh). ACOS is a top 3 song for me I think, it's really that good.

Fix'd

I'd just say ACOS, since it's obvious you want to save SFAM for last.

Also, I think you'd get by fine without listening to WDADU. It has bad production, not JLB, and to me, it feels sloppy in some places. And there is less memorable about it. Some people will defend it, but don't listen to them. I know what I am talking about. :lol ;)

Well, WDADU is a great album, IMO. Thought it ranks pretty low (just above Systematic Chaos).

Just get Scenes at this point. Some DT fans go most of their lives without listening to WDADU, and I don't think it's that great either. ACOS is only all about the epic (which you should get eventually anyway).

Don't push him away from WDaDU! It's a great album, despite its flaws. It doesn't take long to get used to (and to even enjoy, in many cases) Dominici's voice, and the songwriting makes up for the production. At the very least, even if you hate WDaDU after buying it, you'll have a great EP and an amazing album to look forward to.

SFAM. NOW. WTF. Not even a question! :lol

Then listen to ACOS.

You are now done.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

ACOS, SFAM, then WDADU.  You don't want to save the best for last.

I've always looked at WDADU as a sort of DT demo album. Its their for nostalgic purposes, worth listening to for a historical perspective of the band.
SFAM is a masterpiece and I envy the fact that you have that to look forward to for the first time.
ACOS is simply one of DT's best songs, an absolute epic !!!

That's exactly how I see it. Kind of interesting to see where they were at that point in time, but aside from that I don't really see it as a true DT album that's necessary to listen to, unless you're particularly curious about the pre-IaW period.

OMG why are you telling him to skip WDADU??? It's amazing album it has it's own interesting sound and it's very inspired. Yes it's probably my least favorite or second least favorite too but it's still great and there's no reason to pretend it doesn't exist or to think it's not real DT album.

I really like WDADU, but I'd definitely listen to the other two first if I were you.

Get WDADU first, then ACOS and finally SFAM.

WDADU is a relly good album music wise but the production is not really good. SFAM should be the last you listen to cause after that music will not be the same.

I like this order too, but you should listen to the live 2004 version of WDADU.

Yeah, I agree with this. Once you are not a DT fanboy, you are a lot more likely to kinda of shy away from WDADU. I don't think I've listened to it in 5 years. :lol

Alright, I would suggest albums in this order:

SFAM - Just amazing. Period.

Live at Budokan - (this is the album that got me into DT so I could be bias) This show was amazing from start to finish! I have extra special love to the extended Hollow Years version and ITNOG with the extra outro solo.

ACOS - I honestly don't own the EP, simply the ACOS track itself. It will change your life.

WDAD Re-unite - I just can't handle CD's voice (i.e. "...killing haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand"), especially after being used to JLB. You can purchase this from the YTSEjam website.

You need ACOS. It's one of their best songs, hands down. As for WDADU, you should give it a chance, but don't expect anything spectacular. I think it's pretty good, though. It's very interesting that you decided to leave SFAM for last, what a way to conclude.  :tup

As for LaBrie on Budokan, I'm not a huge fan of his performance on it. But he is indeed incredible on Score, much better than on Budokan.  :metal

He was exhausted at that show, and it takes a little bit of a toll on his voice.  His voice just sounds a bit tired at times, and there are spots where he is a bit pitchy.  But still, overall, I would say he sounds good.  Just go into it knowing he isn't going to be flawless so that you have the right expectations, and I think you will enjoy it.

I think I'll buy ACOS and SFAM next then, and probably Budokan as well. I'll get WDADU someday.
