How much are you willing to pay for...
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:20:53 AM »
Some of these will not apply to all, but fill in what you can.

How much are you willing to spend for...

a pair of jeans

a new coat

sneakers

shoes

t shirt

sporty shirt

suit

vehicle

house

vacation

computer

phone

Just a study is what the values are of certain things to various people. I'll fill mine out at some point.
If I forgot something relevant, add it.

I've left a few out that either aren't applicable or I don't really have a meaningful answer for. Also, this is in Australian dollars.

a pair of jeans -
a new coat -
sneakers - $80 - 100? They'd have to be really swell though. I don't really wear shoes that often.
shoes - The only shoes I'd buy are sneakers, so see above. :lol
t shirt - $40, maybe $50 if it was a really nice one online where I have to factor in shipping.
sporty shirt - Wouldn't wear one, so $0.
suit - Never bought one, but maybe $200? I don't know. What's a suit worth? :lol
vehicle -
house -
vacation -
computer - $1500. I spent $1200 on my last computer build from scratch, next one will be around the $900 mark. I'd actually spend anything on a computer if I needed it, but I'm always reasonable with my computer builds, and I only build with parts, so I don't think I could justify a computer over $1500 to myself.
phone -

These are maximums, but I like value for money. I don't like to spend excessively just because I have the money.

Hey tick, TV/home theater might be another common item to add. Just a thought.

@obscure, that was beautiful. And not too far off base. :lol

If it weren't for the EVH stripey sneakers I've been eyeing off, your answer would have been spot on though. :tup

And $7500 for a computer? I couldn't spend that if I tried. One day I bought 3 new computers and it only cost me $1100. :blob:

a pair of jeans - $30
a new coat - $70
sneakers - $50
shoes - $50
t shirt - $8
sporty shirt - $20
suit - $150
vehicle - $15,000
house- $300,000
vacation - $3,000 (for a family of four)
computer - $1,000
phone - $50

For the most part I'm a pretty frugal guy and don't want to waste my money on things I don't really care all that much about.

a pair of jeans:  used to be $40, now there is uasually a sale at old navy or something where I can get a pair for <$20, so I won't pay more than that.

a new coat:  Last 2 coats I got were xmas gifts, so I dont know.  Prob under $100

sneakers: $40

shoes: For leather dress shoes prob $80 - $100, but I have what I need so I wont be buying any in the near future.

t shirt: Usually get these as gifts or freebies, though I buy undershirts every so often and I look for the cheapest price I can find for cotton shirts that aren't paper thin

sporty shirt: ?

suit: paid $400 for my last suit, and I think I overpaid.  I won't pay that much again for another if I need one.

vehicle: Don't know.  I plan on keeping my car until the wheels fall off.

house:  At this point, I hate the idea of a mortgage, so no more than I can pay cash for.  The idea that a house is an investment is bullshit when you have to borrow money for 30 years to "invest"

vacation:  Depends

computer:  not sure.  Haven't been in the market for one in a while.

phone:  I pay $55/mo for mine right now.  I'd like to pay less.

I hate spending money and just totaled what I spend in one year.  Its much more than I would like to spend and I'm trying to figure out how to reduce it.

a pair of jeans
I usually pay about $50 and don't think I'd shell out much more than that.

a new coat
Depends on the coat.  The leather I wore to work today was $1100

sneakers
The ones I wear to the gym these days were about $75

shoes
The shoes I have on right now were $40, the shoes that go with most of my suits are $150

t shirt
depends.  Concert t-shirts, if I want to support the band, $50 to $75 is OK....regular t-shirt to wear under a dress shirt, $5 I guess

sporty shirt
I usually get them when they're on special at Joseph A. Banks or The Men's Wearhouse....buy two get one free....$50 each

suit
depends on the suit.  The ones I wear to work are about $500 each.  My dress suit was $2500

vehicle
I haven't bought a car in 10 years.  My wife's car was $40k

house
I'm in the market right now.  We're shopping in the $400k to $500k range

vacation
I have no idea what we spend on this stuff, my wife handles that.

computer
I don't buy computers for myself, my company supplies them to me.  But my current laptop was $3700

phone
I have an iPhone 4s (32gb) that was supplied by my company.  My wife's iPhone 4 was, I think, $100 because she was due for an upgrade.

a pair of jeans $30

a new coat

sneakers $40

shoes Whatever they cost.  More concerned about comfort and not looking like Herman Munster with my big-ass feet.  Think the last pair was around $60,  but I'd have no problem paying more if necessary.

t shirt

sporty shirt

suit

vehicle 4-6k.  Partial to older BMW's, so I get off pretty easy there.

house

vacation I've spent $5k before, and it was absolutely worth it.

computer $400--always been my magic number

phone $100 w/contract (another magic number)

As a rule,  I tend to get most stuff for as cheap as possible, with a handful of exceptions where I'm willing to pay whatever is necessary.  Dress shoes are a perfect example.  I'm not going to skimp to save $50 and be miserable every time I have to wear the stupid things.  Vacations are a rarity,  and something you ideally want to be a very memorable occasion.  I'll save money where I can,  but I won't be shy about spending money where it'll really matter.

These are all max values, of course.

a pair of jeans - £40
a new coat - I don't generally buy coats because I never wear them
sneakers - £45
shoes - £45
t shirt - £30
sporty shirt - £30
suit - I've never bought a suit so I don't know. I do own one that my parents bought me for a wedding though (I was still in school at this point).
vehicle - Not sure. Don't own a vehicle and I don't see me needing one any time soon.
house- I've only ever rented.
vacation - The most I've probably spent on a holiday was in the £1800-£2000 region. I would probably spend more if I had the money though.
computer - £1500. The most I've actually spent on building a computer has been £1300 though.
phone - £400 (I've actually spent that much on a phone that doesn't come with a contract).

a pair of jeans = $25-$30

a new coat = $40-$60

sneakers = $120-$150 for running shoes becasue the wrong or worn out running shoes can cause you un-nescessary pain and injury.

shoes = $25-$40 depending on the look/quality

t shirt = no more than $25

sporty shirt = same as t  shirt

suit = I wait for the Target sales on suits. Usually can get the pant and matching jacket for $40-$50 a piece

vehicle = we haven't bought a vehicle in a while. Both are paid off. The last vehicle we bought was a mini van  :( and we paid $12,000 for it.

house = Our next move will be 'the' move for us...meaning we will be there until our 3 boys have completed high school so we are looking at moving into at least a 4 bedroom. Probably won't go over spending $210,000. I know markets are different but in St. Louis that price can fetch you a very nice home.

vacation = $1,500-$2000. I imagine that will increase as the kiddos age.

computer = We are about to drop $800 on a tricked out laptop with all our needs on it

phone = I bought the iPhone 4 when my upgrade was due for $100

I tend to be cheap with some things.  I added dinner out.

How much are you willing to spend for...

a pair of jeans - $30

a new coat (I'm assuming a winter coat) - $120

sneakers - I try not to go over $60

shoes - no clue, I hate dressing up

t shirt - $20

sporty shirt - don't buy

suit - I have one, and that's all I need or want

vehicle - new, $25,000

house - this always depends on the local market.

vacation - whatever I can afford

computer - $800

phone - $150 every two years

dinner, per person, not formal - $100 if its something I really want, special, or its sushi.   $20 if its at a chain restaurant

Wow, dinner out, that's a loaded one.  Usually I don't go over thirty bucks, not including tip, though my highest paid was $180 for an eight course tasting menu, no booze included.  I do know that your bill at my place was more than friendly, 18 bucks if I remember correctly. ;)

I know the pay scale is likely quite a bit lower than here in the Boston area, but wow.  Even now, with the implosion of the real estate market I couldn't get a cardboard box around here for that kind of cake.  The only reason I am going to spend as much as I am going to spend, though, is because I'm going to stop paying my mother's rent and move her into an in-law apartment.

This will also be "the" move for us.  Next time I move after this will be when I retire and then it will be straight to somewhere near Denver, CO.

It's not something I would do often, but if I'm out of town I'm willing to drop a little more for exotic.  Sushi was cheaper out in SF, and better to than here.  To get good sushi locally for me, it's going to cost me a pretty penny.

Locally, I don't spend more than $20 including tip in general.

And yes your price was more than reasonable :)  My beers cost almost as much as my food.

house = Our next move will be 'the' move for us...meaning we will be there until our 3 boys have completed high school so we are looking at moving into at least a 4 bedroom. Probably won't go over spending $210,000. I know markets are different but in St. Louis that price can fetch you a very nice home.

Yeah Barry, I am always in shock when I watch the HGTV shows or whichever 'Flip this house' program may be on and I see the prices of homes in the 'major' cities. It's crazy. The home we live in now we paid $164,500 for back in 2004. Last winter when we refinanced it appraised at $173,000. We have a finished basement with a nice laundry/storage area as well, first floor with both a modest living room space and kitchen and a half bath and the upstairs has the master and two bedrooms, half and master bath. You're looking at just under 2000 S.F (I think it's like 1985 S.F) Plus I have .75 acre lot, a nice composite deck, two car garage....oh and my neighbors are pretty cool and we all get a long well.
Instead of refinancing last winter we almost pulled the trigger on building a home...it was actually a spec home for a new subdivision that was already under construction and had 4 bedrooms plus all the bells and whistles, but they opted not to use it as the spec home. So the offer was greatly reduced just to get it sold and that price was $205,000. We technically could have been able to afford that...but essentially would have been house poor. We looked at it and it would have left us with literally NO cushion money wise each month so we used a bit of wisdom and passed. We have reached the point now to be prepared for that price range, just need to find the right spot and figure out the kiddos schooling location. But I have a feeling a lot of you guys who live on the East and West coasts in the major markets would be just as shell shocked about the prices here in the Midwest....only in the 'good' way.

About the same here.  Which is why I'm shopping in that range.

My current home:  1098 square feet on a .25 acre lot.  Purchased in 2000 for $172,000, will probably appraise today at $160,000-ish, luckily I've been slamming a lot of extra principle payments into the mortgage and we only owe just over $100,000 on it now, so I can price it pretty aggressively in the spring when we put it back on the market.  Problem is, it's a, um, shall we say...."handyman's special" and in a market that's saturated with tons of good quality homes at reasonable prices right now, in my area the average time on the market before sale is about 18 months  :eek

We were THRILLED when our home appraised for what it did. On top of that, my wife sold the home she bought while single in downtown St. Louis for $116,000.....after paying $94,000 for it only 2 years earlier! I mean she sold that home literally within a month, maybe two before the bottom fell out of the market everwhere. After all was said and done with the closing costs of our new home, commisions and what not...we put down $20,000 on our home when we bought it. I don't remember the exact amount but on my last statment I believe we owe $135K and some change still?
She put us in a great spot to start off our marriage/family by first off buying a desirable home in the city, maintaining it and touching it up....then we were blessed enough to have the timing just right to really get the maximum she could have out of that home. I can not imagine for one second having to pay more than 210K-215k for a home. That 500K talk is just insane! Good thing you guys are loaded

How much are you willing to spend for...

a pair of jeans- I don't buy my clothes

a new coat-

sneakers

shoes

t shirt

sporty shirt

suit

vehicle- I didn't buy my car, but I wouldn't want to pay more for a car than 10,000, because that's beginner player level cheap by Gran Turismo standards.

house- No more than I'd be able to pay upfront.

vacation- If I'm not there for some important function, I'm probably not going to want to do vacations.

computer- I don't know computer prices.

phone- If my iPhone keeps on running and isn't totally obsoleted, that's all the phone I need.

a pair of jeans   On sale for $35 dollars

a new coat   Around $100 at Burlington Coat factory. Had the same coat for 5 years

sneakers   - No more then $50

shoes - Don't care about shoes

t shirt - no more then $20

sporty shirt - No more then $20

suit - I have no interest in suits $0

vehicle - The car I want is listed at $35,000.

house - Between $400,000 and $500,000. I'm really more interested in having land rather then a big house. I would be happy with a 3 bedroom house as long as there's a couple of acres of land.

vacation - $2,000- $4000

computer - $1,500 max

phone $200 max
