Suggest a Project for Mike Portnoy
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:17:34 AM »
My dream:

MP gets Galactic Cowboys back together and is their drummer. It would be perfect for him. Metal-y (but not prog) + Beatles.

Monty Colvin is a songwriting factory and with his solo career after GC ("Crunchy") has put out some decent to very good albums. But he needs Ben Huggins to lead on vocals and alternate songwriting. Wally Farkas is a great guitar player, but I'd be happy with anyone decent.

They are all on facebook. Make it happen, Mike! :)

Mike collaborating in Devy's next not chaotic album

MP collaborating with Arjen Lucasen's next project (Preferably Ayreon)

MP collaborating in the next Frost* album

The first would be awesome, but Ed is an amazing metal drummer and works SO well for Arjen's albums, but I wouldn't mind hearing what MP could do with Arjen (NOT on an Ayreon album).

MP on the next Frost* album would be nice, but considering how well NDV sounded on their live album The Philadelphia Experiment/i], I wouldn't mind hearing Nick play with Jem.

I think MP would do well with DS and their current show line-up (with MacAlpine and Sheehan). I like the chemistry between Sheehan and MP, and I think if they did original material (and not DT covers), they could do some sweet jam/fusion stuff...like an alternate LTE. I wouldn't mind this being a new instrumental project because that is something MP hasn't done yet (Prog with Neal/TA, Pop with Flying Colors, Metal with AMob, and classic rock with John Sykes...wait, is that even happening anymore?).

So, in short, Portnoy/Sherinian/Sheehan/MacAlpine for a new instrumental project.

-Marc.

Yeah, wouldn't be a big fan of him drumming on the next Frost.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not the biggest fan of his drumming these days, there's a lot more interesting drummers out there. His greatest skill for me is the ability to scrape together other interesting musicians. Even though that capability might be coming to an end too.

A few suggestions with varying likelihoods:

1. I'm really liking Flying Colors, from what I've heard so far. More of that would be cool but that's not something that could be done full-time.
2. MORE TRANSATLANTIC. No excuses.
3. The Portnoy/Sheehan/Sherinian/MacAlpine lineup was spectacular. I would pay money to make this happen.
4. I also wouldn't be opposed to a Liquid Tension Experiment reunion. Why not? I'm a huge fan of LTE I and LTE II and maybe that could resolve some of the bad blood between the band members. (Then again, maybe not...)

That would be fucking amazing!  Huge GC fan here.  And I think Mike could add some really interesting drumming to their sound.  It could also make that band more financially viable if Portnoy was with them.  Someone get this suggestion to Mike pronto!

Never heard of Galactic Cowboys before, went to youtube and listened to Psychotic Companion...

Holy Shit that was awesome!  Like fo realz.

Do they always sound like that, or was that an anomaly?  I love this kind of music.  Super riff heavy, gritty yet melodic vocals, excellent grooving and not ultra-fast drums with huge distorted guitars.

Thanks for introducing me to them!   :tup

Yep, that's pretty representative! It comes from the album Machine Fish, which is a good starter, I'd say. But they're all great. Earlier albums have more thrash influences and later albums have more alternative/grunge influences.

Someone once described them, pretty early on in their career, as Metallica meets The Beatles.  That's fairly accurate (though you might want to throw in a side of King's X), especially with their earlier albums, particularly Space In Your Face, though there are some progressive flourishes thrown in as well.  Machine Fish is probably their all around heaviest album.  After that their sound began to expand to include more alternative, punk, and even pop elements.  But I adore every single one of their albums in different ways.  You know they opened for Dream Theater on one of the Images and Words tours, too.
