Looking back at the ship that got stranded and left passengers without working toilets... you'd think there would be a back up generator in place that in the event the whole ship lost power you could still use bathrooms in the event of an emergency.

And Carnival is offering them $100 refunds and half off a future cruise.  :lol  I suspect this is their way of saying "we're not giving you jack shit now, since you're just going to turn around a sue us anyway!"

There is.

"The Carnival Dream malfunction, which occurred during a routine engineering test on Wednesday while the ship was alongside in Philipsburg, rendered the emergency generator inoperable. The propulsion systems and primary power sources were not impacted."

The scary thing is that the Dream is 3 years old. These are not ancient vessels on life support, just waiting till they are put out to pasture.

I also read this too, so maybe we are looking at different ships? "They will receive a full refund for three days of their cruise and 50% off a future sailing."

No dire words from senior management that I have seen. But the Heat are on their way to another championship, so all is well.

If that was directed to me, the last one I posted was the newest meltdown. The people aboard the Dream are getting 3 days pro-rated. The people on the Triumph are getting a bill and a future discount.

Live stream of the parbuckling. This is really quite fascinating. They're making pretty swift progress. You can't actually see movement, but the waterline has gotten considerably higher just in the 30 minutes I've been watching.

Plus, there's always the possibility that the thing just up and crumbles right before our eyes.

Also quite refreshing that there's no talking head commentary.

I've had the TV on the live coverage since this morning. Of course I am not watching it but every hour or so I take a look and see if the ship is still alive  :lol

Can't stream at work but following the progress. Amazing feat if they are able to pull this off.

The transcript of the conversation between the captain and the coast guard is still good for a laugh/facepalm even to this day.

Vada a bordo cazzo! :D That became a meme for a few weeks in Italy. I guess we (Italians) are good at laughing at everything, tragedies included.

I heard there's an ongoing war about who will get to dismantle the ship and get the scrap metal. Almost everything is re-usable, and the engine components are extremely valuable. Plus, there's hundreds kilometers of copper wires from the electric network of the ship that can be reused!

I say gut the hell out of it. I think it'd be nice though if the hull was brought to sea and sunk for the purpose of creating a reef.

It's definitely going to be scrapped. They made that decision long ago. I think the ongoing discussion is about who gets the job.

Japan is probably the most likely contender. The majority of Toyotas on the road have old WWII vessels in them.

They're just shy of 13°. At 24 they stop using the cables and start filling the sponsons.

I'm not sure if that's the case today, but it was at least a decade or so ago. I remember watching a documentary (pretty sure it was about the sinking of an aircraft carrier to make an artificial reef), and in it it was discussing how Japan (mainly Toyota) has won most of the auctions for decommissioned American WWII battleships, destroyers, and air craft carriers. They recycle the hulls to make chassis for their vehicles.

Three hours ago the third tier deck hadn't even cleared the surface. Now they're passed the fourth tier.

They started filling the sponsons about 45 minutes ago, and it's actually noticeably faster now. At the last press conference they estimated this stage to be complete in 3 hours (actually 2-4). Don't know if that means upright, or just vertical enough to start putting sponsons on the bottom.

Now that it's vertical and the sun is out, it's damn near as ominous as it was laying on it's side. The starboard side is pretty much trashed in a couple of large swaths. It's also quite peculiar to see it sitting as low in the water as it is. Just comes off as "not right."
