Give me a new TV show to watch!!!
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:17:25 PM »
So the title pretty much says it all. Basically, I want a new show to get into as I haven't been able to find anything great recently. It can be old or new. So that you can have a decent idea of what my taste is like, here is a list of some of my favorite shows.

1. The Wire (HBO)- don't plan on ever finding another show this incredible, but something close would be nice.
2. Six Feet Under (HBO)
3. Lost (ABC)
4. Dexter (Showtime)

And then in no particular order...
24 (Fox)
Prison Break (first 2 seasons)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
Deadwood (HBO)
Survivor (CBS)
EDIT:
Game of Thrones

Suggestions?

Ah, I should have put that on my list.
I have seen it, and liked it quite a bit.

Community. Watch it. Now.
+1 - to both!

But mostly Sherlock. Sherlock is aboslutlely superb. The phrase "modern day reboot" is an absolutely terrifying one, and I'd forgive you for having no confidence whatsoever, but then you see it, and it's superb. One of the most beautifully shot, scripted and acted programmes on television. this clip - from early in episode 1, so don't worry about spoilers - will dispel every fear you've ever had.

Community's great too, but i;ve only just started on it mysefl. More importantly, is DOCTOR WHO. the good thing about Doctor Who is that it reinvents itself every few years. You can start from the 1963 series if you're a total masochist, you can start from 2005 if you're moderately completionist, or, if you're sensible, you can start with The Eleventh Hour in 2010, which is the most recent Doctor and my favourite episode the show's ever produced. Here is a preview of how brilliant it is. Yes, that is the bloke in my avatar. Nicely observed. Well done you.

Yeah, might as well get on the rest of the Great Dramas.

Also, even though you didn't mention any comedies, I'm gonna throw Archer out there, because it's amazing.

The Shield
The Sopranos

Those and The Wire make up my top 3 TV shows. Lost and Dexter are probably #4 and 5 (and 24 and Prison Break are up there as well). If you like The Wire but haven't seen The Sopranos you should definitely watch it (unfortunately though it's obviously not quite as good as The Wire, although even "not quite as good as The Wire" is a complement rarely given to a TV show). The Shield is the only show I maybe like better than The Wire (although I'd almost say it's more my favourite show while The Wire is "the best" show, even though there's not much difference) - it doesn't have the wide scope and cast and even though it is realistic and gritty like The Wire it's still a bit more "TV", but it really makes up for it with great main characters, an amazing central plot and intense storyline, especially as the seasons go on.

Also for comedies, Arrested Development.

Any person's priority should be to finish the Great Dramas.  Therefore, the way forward should be:

Breaking Bad
Mad Men
The Sopranos

Party Down. Stars series that ran for two seasons and was subsequently canceled due to the idiocy of humankind. Don't let that detract you from watching it for a second though, it is completely rewatchable and is worth every second.

That is all.

This is the correct post. Also, Arrested Development and Community on the comedy side of things. I'm also just getting into Sons of Anarchy (like 4 episodes in) and it seems pretty promising.

Just finished watching three seasons of Sons Of Anarchy and I'd definitely recommend it as well (Season 2 especially is amazing). I'd still recommend the other two shows I said above it though (although Sons Of Anarchy does have elements of both of them, being made by one of the people behind The Shield and being about a crime family).

I'll also throw one down for Mad Men. What a terrific show. And I don't watch it personally, but I've heard rave reviews for Boardwalk Empire.

SPARTACUS!!!

New season starts jan 26th

Watch Gods of the Arena first, then Blood and Sand

And if you have a wife or girlfriend convince her to watch it and prepare to be attacked after the show. The first couple of episodes of Blood and Sand are hokey but stick with it the plot twists with Lucy Lawless get really juicy......litterally.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Seeing that you like Survivor, I'll suggest The Amazing Race and Big Brother.  Both very addicting reality shows.  The only potential problem with Big Brother is that it comes on 3x a week, which can be a pain if you have other things to do.  Regardless, it's worth it.  Also, with Amazing Race going to so many places around the world, it's very cool that it's showing in HD now.
