How much time do you spend commuting to / from work in a day?

So after looking for a job for awhile now, I've found one that I've got a good chance at landing. Thing is, it's about an hour's drive away, and I'm not quite ready to move at this point. Just wondering if anyone else here spends a lot of time commuting to / from work and your thoughts on it.

Let's see.  I've commuted 45 minutes, 2 hours, and 20 minutes.  The shorter the better.  2 hours sucked huge balls.  45 minutes wasn't so bad, but traffic coming home could make it an hour and twenty sometimes so that sucked.

It's a 20 to 30 minute walk to campus for me. I could ride my bike, but I hate biking.

I've done the hour long commute before,  and it's kind of a drag.  In my case* the earlier you left, the longer it took to get there due to traffic.  So I could leave at 8:30 and get there by nine pretty easily,  but since I had to be there at 8:30,  you'd have to leave closer to 7 to make it on time.  Driving home isn't a problem,  since you're not on a schedule,  and I could amuse myself on the return trip.  The trip in really sucked, though. 


*my mother had a very similar commute many years later and had the exact same experience.

I used to have to do an 80 minutes to that gigantic fucking lake in my state. It was alright but people suck at driving, and there are more encounters with more time. Still, good chance to listen to a fuckload of music.

Currently, it takes me .1 seconds to get to where I need to be (online).

Close to two hours each way, but mitigated by a few factors:

1) Work at home at least once a week.
2) Get to work at 10:30 to 11:30, put in less than eight hour day, but don't take lunch either.
3) Have worked at same employer for more than 10 years, so they give me more leeway.
4) Drive most of the way (against traffic) once or twice a week, so don't get sick of commuter train.

If I had to drive every day with traffic, I don't think I could handle it.

To school is about 30-35 minutes and back is about 25.

To work is about 40 minutes to and from.

Uni was about an hour each way if you include the time i waited for the train and bus. That was bad enough, I don't know how people who have to do longer than that day after day don't go mad!

I don't know what your situation is, but I hate commuting so I'd just bite the bullet and move.

That's happened to me once. I was driving home from some place an hour away way late at night and nodded off about half way there. I'm not sure how long my eyes were closed (probably one a few seconds but it felt like much longer) but when I woke up I was in the other lane. It scared the shit out of me

I'm about 1 3/4 to 2 hours (in total, 45 mins to an hour there, an hour back), mostly because I catch public transport (Home: car, train, city bus: Work). If I drove it would be more like an hour and 20 or 30, but I like having the time to unwind/read/listen to music and not have to worry about traffic/dickheads.

So the way I see it is its a reasonably long commute, but its a tradeoff between living in a shoebox close to the city or a big, newly constructed house with a backyard further out of the city. You'll also find that you adjust and learn to make use of the time if its a longer commute.

My actual commute is about ten minutes each way, but I drive trucks so I can drive anywhere from an hour to 11 hours (a day) for work.

40 miles, one way.  Takes 45 minutes up to an hour and a half depending on weather & traffic.  The trip to work usually isn't too bad but I HATE the return trip.

Keurig FTW! Thinking about it more and more, I'm not too dismayed at the hour trip, and after looking it up it seems like a relatively "easy" drive.

About 30 minutes to school. I can usually make it in 20 if I speed down the backroads though.

Oh oops, I chose the wrong option. Anyway, the liquor store is about 25 minutes from my place without traffic, which I sometimes hit... but my new job will pretty much be all driving (from home to home, etc. for a hospice)

I predominantly work from home, so it's just a matter of walking down the stairs.  When I do go in to our office, it's about 15 minutes.  Living outside of Toronto though, when I did have a job in the city about 10 years ago, it was either 75 minutes if I took the train, or anywhere between 1 and 2 hours driving depending on a) what time of day it was, and b) if there was an accident on any of the highways.

10-15 minute drive to one job and 5 minute to another. It takes me about 30 minutes to drive to University or about an hour through public transport. (Unlike America, people here generally don't live at uni/college unless they come from overstate). It took me about 60 seconds to walk to school

Mine's about 15 minutes. I've never had a commute longer than half an hour and I hope to keep it that way. I'd have to make a hell of a lot of money to commute more than an hour.

It takes me about an hour and a half to get from home to work. So, 3 hours total every day. You get used to it.

15 to 30 minutes drive depending on the traffic and whether I'm dropping Sue off to grandma.... sometimes I wish it was longer though...  as I love listening to music when I'm driving.

10-15 minutes currently. I've had an hour and a half commute before, needing to get to work at 730. Leave at 6, be fine, leave at 6:05 I would be 15 minutes late. Stupid.
