Official TV Thread v. It Finally Happened
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:56:41 AM »
Well, I guess it's time to bite the bullet and finally make one of these suckers.  There's been a dozen incarnations of the movie thread, but as far as I know it, none for its companion (and imo, superior) medium.

So here's the deal, I think: general TV commentary and discussion on shows (even if they have threads of their own, it's kosher) goes in here.  Spoilers should be well marked and put in small text; let's not ruin anything for anyone else.  There are a lot of shows that don't have a large enough following here to support their own threads (as my exercise in making a Homeland thread proved), so talk about shows like that works best here, as opposed to detailed/voluminous discussion that might be better in an individual thread (like the way things work for particularly movies, such as The Dark Knight Rises).

Anyways, here's the critical consensus on the year's best TV show's via Metacritic.

And here's a more detailed list from the AV Club.

I finally finished watching all of Samurai Jack the other day.

What a great show. Pity that it never got finished and I suspect it never will.

Samurai Jack is a very good show, and I don't think anyone would disagree.

Childrens Hospital and Archer were both on the AVClub list. I approve. :hat

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The best comedy series right now!

I didn't know that many people other than the Emmy voters thought that.

Critical consensus is that it's declined hard and fast from its first season.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I stil enjoy watching it, but it's nowhere near the best comedy on TV. I'd easily take Community, It's Always Sunny, and probably a couple other shows over Modern Family.

I just want to take a minute to appreciate how stellar Beavis and Butthead has been since its return :tup

FYI GP, I just watched the first episode of The Wire with a friend last night.  He works as a police service aid at our local PD, and he said that it might be due to us being a smaller town (40k), but the chain of command isn't that hard-assed to each other.  Other than that though, it looks interesting, and we'll probably give it a few more episodes.

Weighing in to go with Modern Family... perhaps because our family is so much like the Dunphy's.  Dorky dad doing his best, hot mom, clueless son, and a bright and ditsy daughter (even though I only have one daughter, she can be both book smart and totally ditsy at the same time).  We nicknamed her Halex.

Fringe, Parenthood, Last Man Standing, Glee are the other regular shows in the Jingle household.  Some for the family, some for the parents.

I don't think I got fully involved until episode six or something.  It is the best show ever, but it's also a pretty slow burn.

I need to start watching Louie.

The knock on it (summed up here and here, for example) is that the show is too content to spin its wheels, and is generally too lazy in its characterization and writing.

Seriously. Ugh.

Anyway I just finished the second episode of season 2 of Breaking Bad. That show is so good. I really want the second season of Louie to come out on DVD/Netflix so I can start watching it. Love that show so much.

Someone said ''god damn'' on S2 E1 of The Dead Zone. Took me by surprise. Did they start censoring that before or after the Super Bowl fiasco and maybe this just slipped through?

I like a fair amount in those lists and there are still some I need to check out.

I haven't seen any mention of Burn Notice, a show I recently got into. I like it plenty, anyone else a fan?

*hugs*

Got every new episode recorded in HD on SP mode. Also, I'd like to say how awesome Cheers was. I loved it as a kid but seeing as how I was 12 when it was cancelled, I like it even more as an adult since I now get just about all the jokes whereas I was probably only getting like 50-70% as a kid.

I'd like to share my immense love for the cancelled show Party Down (Starz). The reason for its cancellation can be seen in the stupidity of humans, because this show is amazingly funny, witty, and sexy. If it is put back on the air, I'll consider not destroying this world. But that won't happen, because it's too awesome for people to realize. Long live the Party Down team. Fuck Uda Bengt.

Ohhh my GOD! That ending was totally worth suffering through the other 10 minutes of whatever that was. Love it. How nostalgic...SIIIIIGH.

It wasn't that bad but I don't like Children's Hospital all that much. Seems like it tries a bit too hard. But either way, thanks. That was great. I'm gonna go cry now.
