Mizzl's top 30 songs ever v. SOMELANCHOLY
« on: December 18, 2011, 06:22:50 PM »
Hmm so i've been thinking about this for some time and i thought it'd be a good idea :p It's a question i've asked myself several times the last few years.. I've always known my top 3/4, but the rest i've never really wondered about until now. Here goes! I'm warning you tho, it contains many sad songs hehe. Also, lots of band repetition, but whaddya do about that

30. Porcupine Tree - Stars Die
Let's kick off with an early Porcupine Tree song that's I've always loved. I don't really know what the lyrics are about exactly, but I feel that this isn't necessary; for me, it's about the impression it leaves on me. This song is in itself quite simple, yet very, very beautiful. The sound of Steven's voice matches so well with the ambience in this song.

I don't know if he's a fan of The Who, but that song would be cool to see on his list.

29. Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
This song is so beautiful; the chords for it are some of the most amazing I've ever heard, and then the 'it wears him/her/me out' chorus just cracks me too. The vocals are of course a shining point in this song, as well as the lyrics, in particular "But I can't help the feeling I could blow through the ceiling, if I just turned and run". I love that part so much. This was actually the first Radiohead song I've ever listened to/liked, which was about 5 years ago when I was still into Tool. It's so cool to relisten it many years later and realise you love it ^.^

AND WE RESUME THE LIST WITH AAAAAnother Porcupine Tree song lol

28. Porcupine Tree - Stop Swimming
This song is so depressing. Maybe it's time to stop swimming. Starts off with a drum rhythm that's somehow sad to me, then Steven's sad beautiful voice comes in and I cry inside. Also, only Steven Wilson could create a beautiful chorus with only the word "Softly". Again great lyrics, most notably "I'll leave now, this can't continue. But I forget which door I came through.  And I know that the lift can be... painfully slow, so I think I'll leave by the window". Epitome of suicidal sadness right there. Or as the man himself says it: "This is a very sad song, but if you're like me, I always find the saddest music is also the most beautiful and this is one of my favorite songs that I've ever written"

Okay, so it's about time for my next pick I'd say :p

27. Coheed and Cambria - The Willing Well: II - From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
A happy song. Well, at least it starts off that way, with one of the happiest and most joyful pieces of music I've heard. However, as the song progresses, it builds up into a really epic ending, gradually. Coheed does such an amazing job at building the song up that it leaves me baffled at the end every time. At "No one runs faster than you can" I feel like I'm ready for battle. This is one of those songs that you know exactly what's coming, but never gets old.

Well, no-one's said anything but I don't care

26. Porcupine Tree - Feel So Low
Promise this is almost kinda the last PT song! I think. Anyway, this song starts off with a simple guitar melody that immediately makes you want to curl up and cry, and this is carried throughout the whole song. Now, the lyrics may seem a bit whiny, victim-like and 'emo', and they are to an extent, but they feel very personal as well. The best lyrics in this song in my opinion is the "thanks" at the end of the song, it's so subtle and sarcastic yet so beautiful. Some people view this song as one of PT's worst, but I regard it as one of the (and probably in the strict sense of the word it is) saddest song I've ever heard, and thus, one of the best.

Totally. :neverusethis:

25. The Lamia - Genesis
I think this is the only oldie on this list, but boy oh boy what a good one. I'm not sure if everyone is familiar with the word lamia, and for those that aren't, it's a child-eating daemon, but that's beside the point. This song probably has my second favorite piano chords in the whole universe, next to #1 on my list (OHMYGOD A HINT). So creative and soothing, but at the same time a strange kind of sad, as if the end of all things is coming. And of course Peter Gabriel's lyrics make this song too, as well as his voice. Naturally this is the part of the story where the protagonist Rael enters a chamber with three sexy snake-like feminine creatures in a pool that want to sleep with him and nibble him but Rael accidentally kills them, and then Rael eats the remaining flesh of the dead Lamia. Absurd happenings aside, this song has such amazing transitions from a sad part to a scary part to an intermezzo etc, but it all adds up beatifully. My favorite from Genesis (yes, better than Supper's Ready),
