ORCHID!

Mad amount of props for that, it's a fantastic album.
Also interesting how you name "In mist she was standing" and "The Twilight is my robe", two of my favorites on the album.  :tup

AMOLAD and Decon are also great.

OMG I think I just came at that update! Singularly the best update anyone has ever done on these threads!
My Fave Maiden album (and in my top 5 all time), an extremely underrated Opeth album that is also one of my faves by Opeth, and then Decon! All would be in my top 50 albums ever if not higher. Fantastic stuff!

I can't really understand how anyone can hate on the first 2 Opeth records. They are really not that different from the later stuff.

Haha, well I've seen at least 4 people praising Orchid in this thread so hopefully it will at least be a fair fight :p

People are dissing on the first two cause they can, the bandwagon-effect. Someone dislikes something, other people follow cause it's the cool thing to do.

The first two albums are where the band started and helped them evolve into the amazing band that they are, IMO they should be appreciated not insulted.

Orchid is a good album, even with as much shit as I give it for the production (and because I know it pisses Lat off). Morningrise, on the other hand, is a different story.

DISCLAIMER - THE NEXT TWO ENTRIES (WHICH MAKES THREE IN A ROW) ARE DEVIN TOWNSEND RELATED. DEAL WITH IT.

8. Alien by Strapping Young Lad

Now, if you thought the last album was full of whacked out shit, then let me go ahead and throw some more in your face. This album, this album right here is my definitive rage album. Never has an album felt more therapeutic to listen to on a bad day, when I just need to shout "Fuck you twatnugget". This was back when Devy was still into drugs, alcohol and being an angry sonofabitch. And you can just smell the sweaty rage that drips from this album. I don't really know however what word other than insane to use in order to describe the overall sound of this album. It's genre-defying in terms of most metal sub-genres. It's quite honestly what I assume would happen if every genre of metal were to shoot their loads straight into a tube and let it grow.

Highlight Tracks - Shitstorm, Shine, We Ride

7. Addicted by Devin Townsend

Never before have I felt happier listening to music in my entire life. This album is pure ecstasy and joy. Even moreso than the previously mentioned Flogging Molly album, which is saying a lot. Devy's album "Addicted" is what happens when you take pop and metal and let them buttfuck so hard that they get permanently fused together in some weird human centipede sort of fashion or something like that. In the 46 minute playtime, you are taken on a weird journey that has some of that Devy brand insanity, but at the same time is very straight forward, simple and sometimes very honest. Lyrically it's a very cool album, once again with the pop elements and use of very standard song structure. There are some moments, lyrically, that are just easily my favourite lyrics of all time ("That's alright, you're only evil"). I don't really know what else to say about this album without just fellating it to no end. Devin's performances are top notch, Anneke's voice is heavenly and the production of this album is very, very cool. Love this shit to death.

Highlight Tracks - Bend it Like Bender!, The Way Home!, Awake!!

6. The Human Equation by Ayreon

Yeah yeah, Ayreon is cheesy lol his lyrics are poop. Stfu brah. This album is a work of pure genius. With the way Arjen takes all the different musical talents of musicians such as James LaBrie, Mikael Akerfeldt, etc. and works it all together to tell a fantastic and very emotional story, you are in for something out of this world. Throughout out the album you are introduced to many different musical styles, an entire cast of characters and events all revealed as the album and story progresses. The story is actually a rather simple one, but makes for a very introspective tale. Simply put, James LaBrie gets in a car crash, goes into a coma, loved ones worry, we take a journey through his past to figure out if the car crash was on purpose or not. But it's not about a complex story, it's about how this album takes music to reveal a story and takes the vocal talents to voice out each character as they develop. This album is nothing short of fantastic, and is a must hear for any fan of progressive rock/metal of any kind. You just have to be less of an asshole and get passed some of the cheesy lyrics.

Highlight Tracks - Day 10: Memories, Day 11: Love, Day 12: Trauma

Alright, from here on out I will only be doing one album a day to increase tension and make you hate me even more k? k.

I give Orchid a lot of shit, but it isn't that bad. It's just that Morningrise is so much better, and is everything Orchid aspired to be.

Nice Devy choices of course. Addicted is probably the only Devy album I absolutely love, so good job there.

Well if I remember correctly from the Coheed thread I know Lat's a big fan, and I'm pretty sure he's said in the past that Good Apollo vol. 1 is his fave of theirs, and he already has IKS on the list, so.....

5. Octavarium by Dream Theater

Lately, I've been finding myself enjoying albums from artists that really explore the best of both worlds throughout an album. This is definitely one of those times where I feel the band not only went above and beyond with creating a prog masterpiece, but also went outside of their comfort zone a little and wrote some songs that were a bit more risky (I Walk Beside You, The Answer Lies Within). Sure, we noticed that since then they have been following a similar forumla in song writing, but I feel that this album serves as a sort of Archetype for the following albums, and that it does it best. From beginning to end, this album wraps up my attention in a little ball and cradles it lovingly. From the heavy sections, to the soft sections, to the poppy sections and to the absolutely proggy sections this album really does deliver the goods. Though it's not like you guys haven't heard this album before. I'll just leave off with saying this album is easily my favourite Dream Theater album, and definitely deserving of the number 5 spot in my list.
