What Drummers Complete Body Of Work...
« on: December 13, 2011, 11:54:10 AM »
Compares with MP?

When you add up all the quality recorded performances with all the various different bands its pretty amazing. Not that
every project he has ever done will suit everyones tastes, but all in all, even when I think of the "Peart's" and "Bonham's"
of the world and all the "enter any big name drummer here"... it's tough to come up with any other drummer who has
so many unbelievable recorded performances as a legacy.

I'm interested in seeing what your thoughts are as to other drummers who you would consider to be in the same league
(not technical prowess or chops) but top quality performances on SO MANY albums.

....and I'm off to TRY to add all Portnoy's performances up (unless someone else beats me to it) but I'm sure I'll forget
something  :P

I'd take a drummer like Gavin Harrison way before Mike.

I KNEW one of the first responses would be along these lines  BUT this is not what I'm getting at. GH has NOWHERE
near as many albums recorded as MP. And nowhere near as many live recordings either. Believe me...I really love
Gavin's playing too but as far as a legacy of recorded studio and live recordings he has a long way to go.

You seem to be equating quantity with quality, emtee.

You asked for "complete body of work" you didn't stipulate that it had to be the same size.

Quantity does not equality quality.

Oh boy. I did include the word quality in my topic a couple times as I certainly believe MP's recorded performances
are of high quality, but if you feel differently that's fine.

Yeah, but then as soon as someone posted Gavin Harrison you replied with:

Fastest ragequit ever.

MP is still a really good drummer, his peak lasted from I&W until Octavarium.  But Neil Peart rules over him always, and Gavin Harrison and Brann Dailor are sort of tied with MP for my "second favorite drummer" spot.

Emtee did this exact shit fit on MP's forum a couple weeks ago.

"Well I think I'll make this my parting words at MP.COM.

It's been a terrific (almost 6 years) place of musical discovery. The internet version of my old record store. I came here in Feb. of 2005 to cross something off my bucket list and give Mike a personal thanks. I stayed way too long. I'm 49 with a career and grandkids. I want to thank everyone I've had personal interaction with and once again thank Mike for keeping this place going. But it's time for me to move on. All the best to everyone.

Peace "

Hope you're OK buddy. :|

I still don't get the "target on your back" thing?

There are plenty of MP fans on this board.

I mean, right now, MP is kicking ass and taking names in this poll on the Dream Theater section of this board.

If anything, I would say this board tends to be very fair and respectful regarding MP.

In this thread about MP's relationship with A7X most people were very respectful about MP and no one had any target on their backs.

And then there was the thread about Dream Theater lyrics right here, where Portnoy's contributions are mentioned and praised by almost everyone.

That was a quick ragequit.

Also, what fucking target? You asked a question and got a answer, you mean because it was one you didn't like you have a target on your back?
