Sick Puppies. I knew plenty about them already and I even bought their first major label album way back in '08, but this was the year I really "discovered" them. Just bought their second album and I ain't lookin' back.

Ambassadors. I saw these guys open for A Great Big Pile of Leaves a couple months ago. I can't begin to tell you what they sound like, so you'll just have to check them out. I promise you won't regret it. https://ambassadorstheband.bandcamp.com/

Buckethead- not a total convert as some of the stuff is a bit too weird for me, but his more melodic side is aesome.

Myrath- Dt crossed with the Arabian Nights. I like it!

Both from recommendations from DTF. So thanks.

Hahaha, I was so enthusiastic about all the great bands I got to know this year that I did not say which was my favourite find (though the quantity of ! might have given it away...):

Ulver; knew about them for a long time, just never gave them the time of day.  Then there's Kauan; never heard of them before finding them on Agalloch radio on last.fm in February.  Most recently, Katatonia; knew about them forever, but didn't get into them until I started to listen to them to prepare for their tour with Opeth.

Other notable discoveries:
Dordeduh
Gallowbraid (check out Ashen Eidolon if you like Agalloch)
Lunatic Soul
Russian Circles
Steven Wilson (I've been listening to PT for a long time, but only recently got around to his solo stuff)
Trentemoller

Modest Mouse.

The overall expansion of my tastes has never been at a faster rate than it has this year though.  What a ride it's been.

Mine's slowed down quite a bit. For me, it's been more about going deeper with artists I know I like, but haven't properly explored. The new artists I'm checking out are a fairly small hand-picked group.

Haven't gotten into much new stuff this year, but among the few new bands I've discovered, Mastodon is the clear winner.

I've discovered so many bands this year that I can't pick a favorite so I'll just list them:
Ahab, Altar of Plagues, Caravan, The Cinematic Orchestra, Cocteau Twins, Deerhunter, Do Make Say Think, Dragonland, Falloch, Fen, The Flower Kings, Gifts from Enola, Iron and Wine, Jesu, The Knife, Lights Out Asia, Maybeshewill, Mew, The Moody Blues, My Dying Bride, Myrath, The National, Nest, Nick Drake, October Falls, Pendulum, Popol Vuh, Red Fang, Scale the Summit, Shape of Despair, Slowdive, Steve Hackett, Stratovarius, Uneven Structure, Vildhjarta, Voyager, While Heaven Wept, Wolves in the Throne Room, Woods of Ypres, 3

I've also been on a metal binge recently so here are some great bands I've discovered just this week:
Elvenking, Dark Moor, Keep of Kalessin, Satyricon, Chthonic, November's Doom, Decapitated, Septic Flesh, Carach Angren, Graveworm, Origin

THRICE.

Been listening to Beggars and The Alchemy Index moderately. But since Major/Minor came out a few weeks ago, I don't know what happened. It's not that I think it's an AMAZING record but it really prompted me to listen to their other stuff some more.

I absolutely love them now, looking up live/acoustic performances like mad. My favorite still might be Beggars though. And another sound of them that I really like is the Air disc. But then again Earth is beautiful as well. And Fire is just brutal. Water's just so spacey and watery. That's what I mean, this band seems to be able to do anything and pull it off extremely well.

Trentemoller

YYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY!!! Trentemoller is da man! His live set (real live, with band) at the Lowlands festival was just heartwarmingly awesome. I love his music. I like to think of him as one of the 'classical composers' of electronic/dance music.

Yeah, the music is definitely something special.  What drew me to it most is that is sounds like post-rock, just almost entirely electronic.  So far, I only have The Last Resort, and Always Something Better is my favorite track.

:tup Great track indeed. My favorite, really tough.. gotta be Into the Trees. The 'drop' at the end is just so heavy yet not-so-heavy but DEEP is the word. Damn.

If you like the postrockish side, check out his sophomore record 'Into the Great Wide Yonder'. I don't dig it nearly as much as The Last Resort, but it has post-rockish/western guitars and a more indie sound to it. It's kind of a living room record.

For a really good rarities collection + his amazing remixes for other artists check out 'The Trentemoller Chronicles'. The first track on the first disc, 'The Forest' could be his best track when it comes to pure sonics.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.
