In other words, an artist you hadn't heard prior to 2011 (or maybe had only heard very little of), but got into them this year in a big way. My pick is easy:

The Decemberists

I have quite a few candidates for this, the biggest ones being:

Tori Amos, who I got into in the middle of the year, July or so, and since I started listening to her 4-5 months ago, she has gone from about 4-5 listens to 1,6k listens on lastfm.
I consider her to be one of my absolute favorite artists, and I have already picked up all of her studio albums (physically) with a few other ones as well.

Sigur Rós - Got into them very early this year, probably in January already, I remember it so clearly because I was playing a lot of World of Warcraft then, (it was right after Cataclysm was released, like 1 month in), and I listened to Sigur Rós like all the time I spent in that game at that period. Was really soothing and peaceful, some good memories of it.
I have over 1k plays with them on lastfm now as well, fairly decent in a year for me.

Two other candidates would be Pain of Salvation and The Dear Hunter, but I had already heard them some before, but those two really CLICKED for me this year, before I had sorta lukewarm/OK-ish feelings towards them, but they clicked bad, and are now very high up for me.

I'll do my top 3, otherwise it would be impossible:

Tallest Man on Earth
Radiohead
Bob Dylan

All 3 were, essentially, new to me this year and are now in my top 10 artists of all time, easily.

Nothing sticks out for me that much, probably because it's been such a great year for new albums by bands that I already know, meaning I have less time to listen to new stuff.

But I would probably say Haken. Checked them out after seeing them mentioned on here and they're pretty cool. Haven't listened to them that much yet, but they seem to have a lot of potential.

Jukka Eskola and Stina Nordenstam. The latter was recommended a while back by Nic, but have listened to her mostly this year.

I've had a lot come up in the past few months, but if I had to narrow it down to just one, it would be Jorn Lande (including his work with Avantasia and Allen/Lande).

My number one choice would definitely be Radiohead, but I'm also very happy about discovering Transatlantic, Faith no more, Boston and Bruce Dickinson's solo career this year as well.

In This Moment - all albums - Maria Brink's vocals are the most awesome thing on earth....along with a couple other things she has.

Iron Maiden - cant believe it took me this long....saw them in concert. Final Frontier is great, Flight 666 is an awesome live album.

Redemption - Snowfall on Judgement Day is awesome!! the new one hasnt grown on me as much.

DTP - Deconstruction - OMG, what an album!!! never thought i would be into anything like this, but i cant stop listening!!!

Edit: I can see where the confusion might have come in though (looking back on what I probably said). Nearly all the stuff before it is done better (and re-recorded) on Anarchists of Good Taste or on Committed to a Bright Future.
