NUMBER 20

BEST
Merry Christmas Darling - The Carpenters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR1ujXx2p-I

No Christmas list would be complete without the Carpenters.  I almost put SLeigh Ride on here because there's this thing my sister and I always do on it that's kinda goofy, but there's so many versions I like better than that, so it wouldn't be accurate.  Some people hate this song, it's one of the few schmultzy songs I really like, mainly for Karen Carpenter's voice... it was one of a kind.

WORST
The New Twelve Days Of Christmas - First Call

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSD1Rqvjcbo

Ironically, my #19 best song is by First Call.  They are a Christian acapella group.  Anyways, this song is just pure cheesiness... yeah it's cute.  Too cute.  And the lyrics are just pure cheese.... and the acapella singing, while tight, it's very boring and uncreative.  Obviously since there's a much better song at #19, I know what they are capable of, and they were more capable than this.

The Carpenters were awesome, and I like this song too, so  :tup

Karen was a serious babe, and Richard is a genius.  I know they represent 70's schlock to a lot of people, but once I learned that basically all the voices and instruments on all their songs are just the two of them, I started listening more closely, and now consider them a guilty pleasure.

Speaking of Harry Simeone, what do y'all think of "Do You Hear What I Hear"?

Crud.  As I mentioned, I'd downloaded a Christmas album by them, but "Do You Hear What I Hear?" isn't on it.  The album is O Bambino.  After "The Little Drummer Boy" came a horrible, snappy, pop version of "The Hallelujah Chorus" (called simply "Hallelujah") then a weird version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" at which point I stopped listening.  I've got plenty of other Christmas music to listen to.  No need to subject myself to anything I don't really want to.

Angels We Have Heard On High - First Call

https://grooveshark.com/#/s/Angels+We+Have+Heard+On+High/vYgV3?src=5

This is what acapella is supposed to sound like.  Moving, layered, excitement.  Not stagnant like the #20 Worst song on the list.  VERY good almost African feel to it, has always been one of my favorite arrangements of this carol.  This is not only an amazing arrangement of this song, it's an amazing acapella arrangement PERIOD.

WORST
Joy To The World - John Tesh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5rg468BpmQ

Hmm.  Let's mix adult contemporary, classical, and techno together!  What a great idea!  NOT.

BEST
Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGuCvFdrWPg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic-vdVCbmmM

Yes, I realize it's overplayed this time of year, but I always get a smile on my face... not just because the song is happy (it's literally "Happy Christmas" translated for those few who do not know), but it reminds me of my childhood.  I still get reminded of Big Bird ice skating to this song on the Sesame Street Christmas special that was on when I was a kid.  The 2nd video is that.  That and the fact that Jose Feliciano is basically Latin music's equivalent to Stevie Wonder, being blind since birth.

WORST
The Eyes Of A Child - Air Supply

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu7fOcWQTpM

Blech.  Air Supply.  I hate songs that try to wrench your heart.  They are almost depressing (and one song in particular actually depressing)... why do they play so many of these this time of year, when people are supposed to be joyful?  Seriously?

I liked that song the first couple of times I heard it, but it is so repetitive that I'm okay with literally hearing it once per holiday season.  Isn't it just the same verse three or four times?

BEST
White Christmas - Bing Crosby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4cjCJZFX04

The first of a few classic and timeless Christmas songs.  There is nothing like the original version of this song... Bing's deep smooth voice totally makes this song his.

WORST
Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sooHzHHh4kM

Yeah this song is a classic for many people, but Burl Ives isn't that good of a singer, and anytime I hear it I don't imagine him, I imagine the goateed snowman.  I don't know.  I just never have liked this song, I think it's annoying.

The best part about holly jolly christmas is that you think of the goateed snowman.  How is that a mark against it?   :D  Other than that, its just an all right song.  If it were up to me, the Chipmunk song would be at the top of my most-hated Christmas songs.

OK you all stop messing up my list!!!  :lol  Anyways I'm not saying where certain songs are on the list!!

It's the 10th day of the list, so here's my next top 5.

TOP 5 COMEDIC CHRISTMAS SONGS
1. Dick In A Box - The Lonely Island
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhwbxEfy7fg
I remember seeing this when it first came out and thinking it was the funniest thing ever... and it still is.
2. Eric Cartman - Oh Holy Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-5AnOXaLks
Just awesome.
3. Non Offensive Non Denominational Holiday Song - "Philip Glass"
https://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/103765/fa-la-la-your-la#tag=generic_tag_philip_glass
This makes me laugh so much because whoever did this studied 20th century music in college because it's EXACTLY like Philip Glass' music.
4. 12 Pains of Christmas - Bob Rivers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yasSkqJBytk
I LOVE this version, especially the card guy and the hangover guy.  And the little kid.
5. 12 Days of Christmas - Bob and Doug McKenzie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2oPio60mK4
This would be higher if only for the fact that anytime I hear this song I think of my mom singing this... and she's tone deaf... and not trying to be... so yeah.  Other than that, timeless.

BEST
In The Bleak Midwinter - Kevin Max

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf3OJsjCUoQ

This is one of my favorite carols, and it's presented beautifully here by Kevin Max, one of the singers in DC Talk.

WORST
You Make It Feel Like Christmas - Neil Diamond

It's Neil Diamond.  The end.

splent, have you heard Sting's album If On A Winter's Night?  I think you would like it.  It's chock full of more obscure carols and seasonal songs, and has a dark, haunting feel to it.

I dind't realize they released an entire album, I'm familiar with Little Drummer Boy and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen which were on compilations

BEST
What Child, Nowell - Tori Amos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uEr3ojqet4

I love the combination of What Child is This along with The First Noel in this one, as well as Tori bringing back the harpsichord for the first time in who knows how many albums!  This is from her holiday album, which is awesome and will be featured in my top 5 Christmas albums coming up.

WORST
Snoopy's Christmas - The Royal Guardsmen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbhzqoYYROA

I highly doubt that Charles Schultz gave this song his blessing.  If you want Peanuts related holiday songs, do not listen to this one... listen to Vince Guaraldi.

BEST
I Saw Three Ships - Sting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeUBgb5xaPQ

Honestly, I could replace this with Gabriel's Message and the list would still be ok.  I love the simplicity, quickness of it, and it's great.

WORST
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Bruce Springsteen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg4ys5whesE

I have never liked Bruce Springsteen, I think he's overrated, he's not that good!  This version is HORRIBLE, he laughs half the time and doesn't even sing it... and it's in C which is a horrible key... never liked it.

I will post #13 soon.   I misplaced my list... I remember what I had for worst, but I can't recall what I had for best.  I'm going to try and recreate my list, this time on the computer (because I'm old school and wrote out the last one)... Give me a little while.
