This list is absurdly consistent.

His signature tells that too.
Right, I really have to check out Thrice.

Don't talk about consistency yet, maybe he has saved Lulu for the first spot, then Systematic Chaos and Chuckles & Mr.Squeezy for nr2 and 3.

3. Ulver - Blood Inside

Ulver is the main reason why I decided to go for the "1 album per artist" rule. Otherwise, those guys would've took like half the spots in this list. Blood Inside is the one I prefer but not by much. Shadows of the Sun or Perdition City are also among my favorites so the choice certainly wasn't easy! Ulver, as some of you know, started as a black metal band. After a couple of albums they just said "fuck that" and went all over the place. Trip-hop, ambient, avant-garde, art rock... you name it. What I love about them is that their music is genre-blending, dark and so constant it's not even funny. So yeah, one of the best band around today, easily. :hefdaddy But enough about the band; Let's talk about the record! The album is bombastic, out-there and very dense. It's also quite a mix of different genres including rock, baroque, jazz and electronica. I think it's a must-have for any music lover, really.

Wasn't expecting NIN, Gojira, or Dir En Gray.

So I assume we have In a Flesh Aquarium at number 1...so what's number 2?  I feel like its dredg.

I'm 100% positive that In a Flesh Aquarium is #1.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

@Thrice: I would like that album a lot more, but I don't exactly like Fire. The other 3 discs are masterpieces though.

CWA as nr2 perhaps? Not sure which of their albums is Marc's favorite. :p

Blood Inside is epic never the less.

2. dredg - Catch Without Arms

Maybe the most simple and straightforward album on the list, CWA is just awesome in every way. The first time I heard "Bug Eyes", I kept hitting the replay button again and again. Love at first sight like they say. I guess there's something about the desperation in the vocals or the guitar sound that I really liked from the get-go. The songwriting is definitely a strength here. There's nothing overly complicated, yet every song is well-crafted and the composition is top-notch. It's a really engaging and emotive record too, with good lyrics and varied instrumentation when necessary (some piano parts, subtle electronic percussions, etc.). My favorite songs are "Bug Eyes" and "Sang Real"... Not very original picks I guess but whatever. :P So yeah, delicious alt rock with a focus on beautiful melodies. Enough said. :heart

Since there's only one album left, here's some bands that barely missed the list: Radiohead, Mr. Bungle and Porcupine Tree.

1. Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium

I guess it's not really a surprise for most of you since I've been pimping this album/band every chance I got for the past two years. :lol So anyway, this is pretty much perfection blasting on every levels. Nothing short of an avant-garde metal masterpiece. It took like 5-10 listens to finally click for me but when it did, DAMN was it worth it! It's out-there, eclectic and genre-blending (anything goes... metal, ambient, jazz, classical, industrial, opera etc.).  The contrast between the female singer and the two growlers/screamers is incredible, and the way they trade-offs their lines is a trademark of the album. The lyrics are also very good. The bass is mind-blowing and the violin really add to the signature sound of the disc. I could talk about this album for hours but, again, there's nothing like listening to the album for yourself if you haven't already. Brace yourself for a schizophrenic trip in a circus of madness. :metal

I expected that. So, I saw them live once and wasn't really impressed. Tried listening to that album and couldn't manage to spin it more than a couple of times. It's weird shit and I couldn't grasp. I will try it again though, because it might just be worth it. One last thing; which do you like better, IaFA or Fables? And what are your favourite tracks from this album?

Elite, like you I just can't cope with the insanity of Flesh Aquarium. But I really do like Fables, as the ideas are more refined and the craziness (while still very much present) is toned down a fair bit. I definitely recommend checking it out!

I love Fables more actually. But since I had the "no 2011 albums" rule, I couldn't put it at #1. Favorite tracks from IaFA are "Psychic Jugglers" and "The Shiver". Favorites from Fables are "Unsolved Ideas of a Distorted Guest" and "Until yet a few more Deaths do us part (the last three tracks)"

They're a bit hard to get into and not for everyone but once they click... damn!! :tup

I haven't quite been able to get into Unexpect either, IaFA stood out as being all over the place for me, listened to it a few times and it didn't really click. (too much to grasp really)
Fables sounded pretty good though, should spin it again.

All in all, I will obviously give the band another chance, but right now I have piles of music already on my list, so I will maybe get to that early next year. :P

cool list.

the one thing i would say about in a flesh aquarium (and any newer-era unexpecT for that matter) is that Exod ALWAYS has the right keyboard part up his sleeve. think about it, out of all the variety of sounds and approaches to playing (not to mention the sheer 'amount' of parts), you'll never for one moment think, *i dont think that's the right keyboard part for this section*

there are a lot of keyboard players out there that i think very highly of, but i can't make the same claim about all of their playing.
