The republican debate tonight
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:42:15 PM »
Anyone else plan on tuning in? I really don't have an interest in watching it, but I plan to anyway. I am hoping Gingrich gets his ass handed to him tonight.

I will try to watch some, but my internet connection might not be good enough.

EDIT: WTF, an anthem before a political discussion?

Bummer, I can't really watch it, the connection is too slow. Something tells me I'm not missing too much.
BTW, I kinda get the impression they're having Ron Paul respond so that the other candidates can either look reasonable on topics, or tough. So, they're using Paul as a sparring partner.

Holy fuck. It did. Rick Santorum just said Africa was "a country on the brinkL. And he keeps saying "Islimists."

The sad part is, I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of those candidates assumed those pronunciations to connect with the base better. You'll never hear a GOP politician pronounce Iran correctly.

Huntsman was far and away the highpoint of the debate tonight, especially when he kicked Romney's ass on Afghanistan, and then again when Romney tried to reply.

Mitt was looking pretty flustered at points.

I liked most of what Jon Huntsman said, but he still doesn't "get it" when it comes to foreign policy, even if he wants to come home from Afghanistan. He wants to keep flying the drones around in Pakistan, like that's not what people are getting angry about to begin with.

Yep. A dead friend, brother, cousin, uncle, mother, whatever, is just as dead from predator strikes as he/she is dead from tanks and infantry. It's not like they don't know it's us blowing them up.

I like Huntsman. If I had to pick a republican candidate, I'd choose him. Did anyone catch Romney say that half of a trillion dollars is five hundred million?

He's closest in the GOP to actually admitting the existence of anthropogenic climate change, so he kinda does it for me.

I hope the process goes haywire and Huntsman wins. I'd probably just not vote if that happened, but I wouldn't be terrified of either Obama or Huntsman in the White House (still gotta fix congress though).

I thought each candidate was given a fair amount of time this time. And Newt surprises with a "mild" stance on illegal immigration.

Ron Paul was overshadowed by Huntsman imho, but Huntsman doesn't speak in talking points like a lot of the other candidates. He will drop out after a few primaries/caucuses along with Santorum, Johnson and eventually Bachmann too

Yeah, but you gotta love the way Perry, when given a chance to back-up Gingrich, totally threw Newt under the bus (along with himself and the position he took a few debates back). When I saw that, I lost what tiny bit of respect I had for him.

It seems like Paul and Huntsman are the only two without a hard-on for attacking Iran.

Did everyone catch what happened when Bachmann showed up on Jimmy Fallon's show the other night?

Fallon's house band, The Roots, always plays entrance music for the guests.  For Michelle Bachmann, they played an old Fishbone song called "Lyin' Ass Bitch."
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Yeah, I heard about that.  Even with my disdain for Bachmann it was kind of rude, I thought.

The only two of these candidates that don't sound completely straight-jacket ready are Huntsman and Paul and neither one of them has a snowball's chance in hell of getting the nomination.

I don't think Gingrich is ready for a straight-jacket. I honestly think hes pretty intelligent, and knows his shit...but I still hate him.

Gingrich would turn being president / ex-President into nothing but a way for him to make money.

The fact that the man served his wife with divorce papers while she was on her death bed is just disgusting.

Everything about him is rotten. Obviously, anybody running for president is going to be a self-centered opportunist, but he reeks of it so much more than anyone else to me.

Maybe I'm just bitter that my alma mater's College Republican club was able to convince the administration that spending $25,000 on him to come speak was a good idea. :lol

Don't worry, the college republicans at my uni paid around that much to get Karl Rove :|
