Celtic stuff
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:59:37 PM »
So, I've always dug the sound, but finding bands that play it to my liking is difficult. Celtic folk metal is cool to an extent, but I'm looking for something a little more chill. A perfect song that exemplifies everything I like about the style is Last of the Wilds by Nightwish. I ask that if you want to give me a recommendation, you give that song a shot. Most of the Braveheart soundtrack (yeah, I know) is sweet also. So, I come to you guys on a quest. I'm looking for celtic music with vocals that aren't screamy/growly/extreme metally or punk. I've tried using wikipedia but when you search for bands that fall under the "Celtic" variety, it is near impossible to actually find a name.

Seriously, if I could have an album of songs like that, preferably with vocals, that is exactly what I'm looking for. Flutes, bagpipes, violins, electric guitars, drums, etc.

Amazing song of an amazing album...

Maybe I should say what I have listened to.

Eluveitie
Primordial
Cruachan

All of those were pretty metal. I was looking for something a little more lite. I mean, I'd love to keep the heaviness, upbeat stuff, but I was just looking for something that didn't growl.

No shit, that gave me an adamantium boner. Fucking sex. I need to hear more. Only thing Celtic I've ever liked are things you mentioned, numbers, mainly Nightwish...actually, only Nightwish. But Eluvasdfasdlkjd? Shits rockin.

Ever hear of Gaelic Storm?  They're really good IMO--nothing close to Celtic folk metal (didn't even know that existed LOL), more traditional stuff.

Dude, they have an entire album that is very light, no growls, and sounds fuckin' beautiful. Check it out.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Does it have to be metal?

Celtic Punk...Flogging Molly/Dropkick Murphys

More Traditional Celtic Rock... Black 47

Flogging Molly is cool from what I have seen. The Dropkick Murphys are a bit too punk, and I've never listened to Black 47. What one or two albums would you recommend?

The self Titled  or Trouble in the Land

They also have a greatest hits spanning the first 10 years of the band if you can find that on grooveshark it gives you a better idea of there overall sound/vibe

If you haven't checked out Flogging Molly's album "Within a Mile of Home" do it now. Right now. One of the happiest albums I've ever listened to.

Um, if you want some authentic old school kvlt Celtic music, check out Alan Stivell's 'Renaissance de la harpe celtique'. One of the most beautiful albums I've heard in recent years.
