Albums in desperate need of a remix/remaster
« on: November 21, 2011, 06:43:31 AM »
I'm realizing there are so many albums I don't listen to as much as I should, just because they only exist as early CD releases that sound plain awful (or I just haven't bothered to find and buy a newer remastered version yet, but I digress).

It just baffles me that there are certain albums that as far as I know have never even been remastered.
As far as I know, none of the Metallica albums have been remastered, and AJFA is in such desperate need of a remix, as no mere remaster could help that mess of sound. I was just listening to some fan made remixes using the stems from Guitar Hero, and it's like hearing the songs for the first time again, although still a long way off hearing it done properly. I would listen to it so much more if I could hear it sounding GOOD.

And the only remasters of the Hagar era Van Halen albums are from Japan, and I haven't managed to get a copy yet. The rest of the world has been plodding along with the same original CD release that sounds flat and lifeless, as any CD releases from that era does. The more popular songs are available on the remastered best of collection, so I know how much better those albums could sound.

It's not like these are obscure albums that aren't worth remastering. They could get people to rebuy all of these albums, and with good reason.

Any other albums that really should have been remastered by now? Or albums that you'd like to be remastered/remixed?

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Pathosray's first album could benefit from a remix and remaster, but since their second album tanked, I doubt it will ever happen.

The first few Kiss albums (especially Hotter Than Hell) lacks a real "punch" in their sound and could use a remaster/remix/whatever.

I actually like the way the drums sound on ADTOE.

I always thought Metallica's  "And Justice For All" would benefit from a remix (turn the bass guitar WAY up)

Virtually every rock CD released in the 80s that hasn't been remastered, especially from the earliest days of digital recording. So much 80s rock just totally lacks PUNCH in the mastering, and sounds so flat and plastic.

Muse - Absolution

Please re-whatever it and take away all of that damn compression.  Almost all of their albums have too much compression, but Absolution is buried in it.  Let the songs breathe, damn it!

Wings Over America.  Probably my favorite live album of the 1970's... it currently just sounds so tinny and dated.

Which sound overly woofy because they're trying to compensate for lack of bass guitar. But it still lacks that presence and attack of the bass sound, not to mention that Newstead is actually playing a lot of good stuff buried in there that would really enhance the album.

The first 4 Pain of Salvation albums would benefit from a remix, but they mainly suffer from bad recording. For example, the snare on The Perfect Element sounds like absolute shit, and the guitars don't sound much better.

ADTOE actually sounds pretty good.  The drums are right where they should be, not blaring like they were on some of DT's other work (SC).  Too bad the music bores me to tears.

As for the OP; I hate to open a can of worms, but Orchid and Morningrise could use a remaster.

You can almost make the same argument for most 70s rock albums too.

Not really.  I would argue that the average rock album from the 70s sounds better than the average rock album from the 00s.

Death Magnetic could use a LOT less compression and more EQ.

The clips of That Was Just Your Life from the studio before mixing =  :omg: PHAT.

The Cure's Seventeen Seconds could use some work. Robert's voice is too low in the mix.

The majority of Siouxsie and the Banshee's albums could benefit from not letting the instruments drown out Siouxsie's voice, especially on A Kiss in the Dreamhouse.

agreed, though i don't think it would slay (the songwriting just isn't there, imo).

while i'm on Dev, i would love a re-mix or re-recording of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing and Ocean Machine; their epicness is slightly worsened from the horrible guitar sound. sadly, the tapes are irrecoverable :/

I hate to open a can of worms, but Orchid and Morningrise could use a remaster.

unsure if this is the can of worms you mean, but i really don't think a remastering will help whatsoever (they've had at least one remaster job since being released, it just wasn't billed — i've seen at least two different masters). those albums need to be re-recorded from the ground up; at the bare minimum, the guitars and bass need seriously upscaled recordings. remastering can't make good from shit.

Everything s so bland tone-wise. It's like paper. That album does not have much colour.

I would love a re-recording of Ocean Machine. It's got more problems than the guitar I think, The Death Of Music in particular has some pretty terrible mixing.
