Another very strong round indeed! There was once again not a single track I was unhappy with.
Rich: Amplifier – Airborne (9 pt)
A strong start to the round, this song has a nice building intro and the band kind of reminds me of what little tool I’ve heard except being better. Lots of great guitar riffs in this and the end solo is quite nice as well.
JB: Bruce Springsteen – Jungleland (6 pt)
I’m vaguely familiar with Bruce and enjoy what I’ve heard well enough, and enjoyed this track well enough, but it didn’t really stand out that well against the competition here all that well. Liked the piano work throughout the track, and loved the sax bit.
Seth: Maudlin of the Well – Girl with a Watering Can (5 pt)
I should really like this more than I do. I had given Maudlin a chance before, and despite a style I enjoy and elements that I like I was never able to really get into them. This is a strong track but I just can’t get into it like I do the top songs from this round.
Ytse: Ozric Tentacles – Oakum (10 pt)
Holy instrumental goodness batman. This track is astounding. The song builds well on itself and manages to be a completely engaging 9 minute instrumental. I find that many instrumental tracks lag after 5-7 minutes, but not this one.
TPT: Queen – The Prophet’s Song (3)
Queen is another classic act I enjoy well enough but have never been big into. Aside from Sheer Heart Attack I’ve not heard much from the band outside of the hits and while I enjoyed this track I think it lacked a bit of substance. The vocals were fun, but seemed to dominate the track and not leave much else to the song.
DTVT: Therion – Via Nocturna (4 pt)
How much I liked this track musically is matched by how much I disliked the vocals on it. I thought I had commented in the growling round or some other about how I generally don’t like the operatic style, and this track takes that style and uses it to death. It’s hard to rank this song due to the discrepancy over what I like so much and don’t care for at all.
Zander: Unicorn – Hiding Again (7 pt)
Once the song really kicks in I’m reminded of a slightly more whimsical Fish-era Marillion for a short section of the song. When the vocals return I continue enjoying the song, but I’m not completely sold on the vocalist. Much of the song reminds me of a band I can’t put my finger of, perhaps touches of Season’s End-ish Marillion with something else mixed in. Aside from the iffy vocals it’s a beautiful track for sure.
Wolf: WASP – The Great Misconceptions of Me (8 pt)
Song sounds like shit, but makes up for that in the fact that it rocks pretty damn hard. I’ve heard a good bit of WASP, but this is probably right up at the top of what I’ve heard. Vocals are very strong and it’s just a well composed track.
