I don't know how to react to this. I don't know whether to laugh or facepalm.

To be fair, he was quite nice during the course of the interview. He was a bit 'full of himself', but still quite nice.

Sad but true. It's unlikely that anyone (within the US, at least) would remember/recognize him from his solo work or his pre-Dream Theater efforts.

Being in Dream Theater is also the only reason he's doing prog metal right now. Do I remember reading somewhere that he just sang pop before DT?

I don't know, I'm not really surprised. I've always thought he didn't really enjoy his time in the band, and he stated a number of times that all of the vocals were out of his range and that it was a problem.

Definitely true, but why is it sad?

I only say it's 'sad' because he's poured everything he's had (both artistically and financially) into his three solo efforts and they've gone virtually unnoticed.

I'd say it's a little sad because he seems to consider being in DT a not-entirely-positive experience. If everyone knew me for something I didn't like doing it wouldn't sit too well with me personally.

I thought it was going to be an interview with Dominci bashing Dream Theater but it's nothing like that. Nice sensationlist thread title though.

This thread stinks, sorry.  Why did you post a single line from the interview in an effort to create controversy when there was none to begin with?  I read through that interview and found myself completely understanding exactly where he's coming from.  Next time, don't do this.  It's dishonest.

Yeah, I can see exactly why it would feel a bit slave driving. It's hard singing outside your comfortable range. It would be very demanding and he might have felt a bit like JLB when his vocal folds ruptured. JLB didn't know if he could hit the notes needed every night. I'd imagine Charlie didn't either.

He describes singing for DT as "working for a corporation...I was a hired hand."

This bothers me, and makes me believe that it's not the guys in DT that are control freaks. It's him. He didn't want a band to be prepared without him it sounds like to me. From everything I've heard of the current lineup being in DT is serious business, in that they are all very serious about the music and always trying to improve. I'm sure they knew a bit of the business side of the music industry when they were Majesty. They were never out to "just have fun" with the music, they were out to make it as a band. Anyone they got to join (I would think) should feel the same. Now, the band is a family. And having someone audition to join a family is a serious proposition, not to be taken lightly.

Then there's "I'd love to say that I wrote all the music, all the charts, and put it in front of the guys, but it was a group effort." When referring to his own work.

So he wants to be in control? He wants complete autonomy in the band? Sounds to me like he wants to be another Arjen A. Lucassen.

I respect him for making music and doing what he loves, but he shouldn't bite the hand that feeds. Seems to me, as an earlier post said, he wouldn't be doing prog at all; he wouldn't be where he is today without DT.

Sad that he thinks so little of a band that gave him so much.
Everything is immaterial. Do you know that reality is immaterial? This is not reality.

I for one never understood what Dominici was hoping to get by naming the band after himself. I'd say it was a cash-grap, but I'm not sure what kind of draw his name actually has. Considering his reputation as being "the bad singer form the first album"* I'd imagine the name "Dominici" would discourage just as many album sales as it encouraged, if not more. Heck, even JLB was not allowed to release a solo album under his name until 2005, simply because the name-recognition was not there. So what did Charlie hope he'd accomplish?

*And I disagree, btw. I think WDADU vocals are fine. Just being honest here...

The label did not want the album/band to be called James Labrie; therefore Mulmuzzler.

Didn't it come out in 2005??? That's hardly a long time ago IMHO  ;)

Anyway, the title is misleading. It makes it seem like he's bashing DT when he really isn't.

O3 isn't that old. I remember Charlie and I playfighting on his forum shortly after its release, so it had to be 2008 or 2009.

Whoops. I was think O3 was the third part (like O1 would be the first, O2 would be the second). I forgot that O3 was the name of the entire concept.

Interesting interview.  I had never read it, and I've never heard any of Dominic's stuff either.  I gotta say tho, Charlie is quite long-winded and repetitive in his answers.  But I guess that's better than people being brief and tight-lipped.
