Is there anyway with polls that you can limit which posters get to vote?
IE: Only nominating people can vote. If you didn't nominate anyone, you shouldn't be able to swoop in and say vote consistently for or against a band.

Okay, I'm ready to begin contacting all the members that participated in the nominations thread but haven't posted in this thread yet in order to make sure (as stated in the OP) that the two-month delay in starting this tournament doesn't cause them to miss out.

A few instructions on how to do this to make it as easy as possible for those helping as well as avoiding accidental spamming of members through unintentionally having multiple people PM'ing the same member:

1. This post will have a list of all the members we need to contact

2. This post will also include a pre-typed private message explaining why the member is being contacted. This way y'all can simply copy/paste it into a PM and only have to worry about making sure the usernames are entered character-perfect in the "To:" box of the PM. It's probably easier to simply send a mass PM to five members at once instead of having to make five separate PMs.

3. The way we're avoiding the spam issue is by making sure that when you intend on contacting people, you:

First, post the names of the five members you're planning on contacting.

Next, send out the PMs.

Last, go back and edit your original post with something like "Edit: Successfully sent."

The message to send will follow this format:

To: [five different members. Do it in this format: "name #1, name #2,..." So that means type in a member's name followed by a comma with no space before the comma but one space after it, then the next member's name and so on] The PMs may not be properly delivered if the names aren't perfectly entered so to insure the accuracy of the names simply copy/paste them from the list near the end of this post into the "Search For Members" field that can be accessed as follows...

Hover the cursor over the "Members" button which is just to the left of the "Logout" button, click on "Search For Members", paste the name from the list into that field and search it, copy/paste that name into the "To:" field of the PM.

This will be the body of text to copy/paste:

I really appreciate all of your help since I've already spent way longer than I thought it would take just to get to this point and the thought of having to do this for 66 more names (after the first five I took on a test drive to make sure my mass PM'ing skills were up to par) is beyond unappealing at this point. I'm still gonna be doing the PMs as well so I don't want y'all to get the impression I'm slacking and we should be able to knock this out pretty quickly

I don't think the forum's software is that sophisticated but I could be wrong. Your point has some merit but I don't wanna exclude people since the basis for this was for everyone to come together and have fun since the actual point of it is to find out the favorite band of the whole forum with Dream Theater removed from the equation. I do get where you're coming from, however, since it ain't that hard for someone to merely post 5 bands but the counter to that is that this forum has a shitload of lurkers whom have never posted but they are in some very subtle way a part of our community and some of them end up posting on a regular basis even in some cases after years of lurkin' off.

I do appreciate your input no matter what though.

Also, a suggestion. Given that many people are kind of saying: "well, its going to be x, y, z, a, b & c" as the top whatever, you could almost run a couple of tiers to the competition..? So you've got the top tier which is going to be the obvious ones, but then run something like WHO'S THE REST THEM?!?!? excluding those obvious picks and excluding bands that, say, don't get a minimum number of votes.

IDK, could be interesting.

Not a bad idea by any means but I feel like if we were to deviate from the format we currently have, then it'd probably be most fair to let everyone vote on all the important options as to how it's run since it would almost imply that I value one member's input over the sum of all others' by tweaking it to satisfy one member's wishes without comprehensively consulting the community.

Thanks pals Like I said in the OP, I'm gonna let the first two days of this round go by before beginning to contact those that submitted nominations for this so as to avoid sending out PM's that aren't necessary but on either Monday or Tuesday I'll either PM you all, and anyone else who's kind enough to join us, and provide y'all with an already-typed body of text to simply copy/paste into a PM and then just have y'all send that out to ten people each or I'll edit the OP to include the body of text.

I'm thinking the most sensible way to make sure we get all of the 100 or so contributors contacted is to have those whom are sending the PM's do five at a time (since the forum's system wouldn't let me send more than 10 per hour) so they'll still have 5 PM's available for their own personal use during each of the hours that they're helping. The best way to do it in order to avoid accidentally spamming members inboxes with multiple PM's would probably be to post which five members you're PMing each time BEFORE you do it and then, once you've successfully sent the PM's, just go back to that post and edit in something like "Edit: successfully sent " (you don't actually have to include the headbang emote ) I'll post the entire list of whom we need to PM in the OP right around the time we need to start sending the PM's out.
