It's not necessarily the best combat system in the world, but I think that's part of the point.
Skyrim: Shitty melee combat, on purpose.

Understatement to say the least.

Seems like killing dragons would be nearly impossible if your character was all about the melee. I have a hard enough time already trying to get them down with my decent archery skills.

Not if you have companions with you.

Played this game almost every waking minute today. I'll barely be able to play it tomorrow. I'm really sad. :'(

So generally speaking, are we all finding melee not fun or are people just not choosing melee-based classes?
Did I miss something, or are there no classes?

Game seems more like Fallout in that regard. You choose which traits you want to build-up, but you are by no means forced to stay that way.

No classes anymore. I kept waiting for the inevitable 'choose your skills' dialogue box to pop, but it never did. I am not at all disappointed that it didn't.

Also, I am not minding the melee combat at all. I'm finding it better than Oblivion and Morrowind, which had shit combat in general.

Those new "finishing moves" make the melee look better, but it's still as floaty as it was in Oblivion. IMO.

No it's just, like Dimitrius said, really floaty.

Yeah, but Skyrim has the dual wielding system, which instantly makes it much more interesting. :)

I'm going to get every ''class'' to a reasonable level to decide which one I want to play, now I got my breton wizard at level 11 and my nord warrior at level 12.

But now the question is: What race should I make the archer/stealthy character?

I guess the most obvious answer is Wood Elf, but ever since my first time playing Morrowind I've had a hatred towards that race for some reason.

Floaty describes the melee well but I still like it, the finishing moves really add to the charm.

Also probably the most satisfying moment for me in the game yet, was when I was fighting a dragon 1on1 as a melee only character and after a whole lot of potions and random food my character climbs on the dragon, jumps up and jams the axe into the dragons skull and then the Skyrim theme starts playing really loud.

Me Gusta face isn't enough to describe the feeling.

I am Nord, levelin 1-hand wep (for dual weild), heavy armor, locksmithing, and restoration.

I chose melee since there really doesn't exist any guides on efficient leveling or great Perk combinations.  Just getting use to the game, which is amazing!

And I am able to play this on High resolution; which is so freaking weird.

Right now im doing the jobs for the Companions.

I love how much content is in this game.  I've played 12 hours now and have only barely started the main quest (haven't picked up the horn yet).  I decided to head north to the College of Winterhold but there's so much to do on the way there!  The best part is that it's legitimate exploring, not being told by someone to go somewhere (some do, but not a lot).

I've played 11 hours today, now it's 2am and I just fell down from some tower to my death while I was trying to loot chests. I think it's time for a small break.

also, has anyone else witnessed a dragon escaping? one of them attacked Riverwood and about half way the fight it just took off.

This game is so insanely good, I can't even begin to describe it. It blows Oblivion out of the water, and could quite possibly usurp Morrowind.

That's pretty much series tradition at this point. Every non-spinoff game in the series has it, including Arena and Daggerfall.
