Anyone listened to the new Joel Hokstra album? Russell Allen on vocals. I'm on the first spin and it's ok. I wished Russell sang like this with Symphony X.

Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake) - guitars, backing vocals
Jeff Scott Soto (Journey/Yngwie Malmsteen) - lead vocals, backing vocals
Russell Allen (Adrenaline Mob/Symphony X) - lead vocals, backing vocals
Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath/Dio) - drums
Tony Franklin (The Firm/Blue Murder) - bass

special guest musicians:
Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater/Black Country Communion) - keyboards
Chloe Lowery (Trans Siberian Orchestra) - vocals
Toby Hitchcock (Pride of Lions) - additional backing vocals
Charlie Zeleny (Joe Lynn Turner) - percussion
Dave Eggar (Amy Lee/Coldplay) - cello

I wrote a review of it around here someplace.  Wait, here.   Joel is a beast, but I could do without Russell Allen.  To me, he brings the record down.   The best song - "How Do You" - is the one where he DOESN'T use that generic gritty hard rock voice (the same one that Jeff uses on Sons Of Apollo).

I know it's a style, the AOR sound, but why does it sound like there's one guy, John Frontier writing all this stuff?

His name isn't John Frontier, it's Alessandro Del Vicchio.

I was waiting for a punchline, like the name was something unrelated, but holy shit, he's Mr. Frontier.

I see he has no involvement with The Magnificient though.

By the way, you got to check out Chloe Lowery (Trans Siberian Orchestra). It's an amazing album (pop oriented).

Is it possible I saw her open for Myles Kennedy when he did his solo shows?   I think it was her; Al Pitrelli was playing guitar for her.  If so, she was really really good.

NFO have probably been my favorite musical discovery in the last ten years (Earthside would probably take that spot if they’d release another friggin’ album, but I digress). Quite consistent through their catalogue, though a couple records don’t quite have that same “zing.”  Internal Affairs is indeed a great debut, and still contains my favorite song of theirs in West Ruth Ave. Amber Galactic is near perfect, and I’ve listened a shit ton to Aeromantic since its release.

They’re fun. They’re catchy. They’re completely unexpected out of left field, being made up of members from the melodic death metal scene. They’re fantastic.

A couple samples:

thought I would use this thread to occasionally highlight a song in that every once in a while catches me the right way.

Tonight it's Eclipse with A Bitter Taste from the 2012 album Bleed and Scream:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CByya52eDH0

It catches an epic vibe you don't get with a lot of the songs in the genre.
Winger would be better!

That album is absolutely unreal, great song pick too.  Haven't listened to it in a long time.  A shame the band is so average now as that album is top notch.

All of this is completely accurate.  This and Are You Ready to Rock are simply top notch - the goodness of what Frontiers used to be.

Frontiers “supergroup” - not bad but I’m getting tired of songs that start off with a banging riff then it all drops out for a quiet verse.

I don't even thing the finger-quote version of supergroup is applicable here.  I mean, I recognize 3/4 of the bands, but wouldn't know those names if my life depended on it.  Not a bad tune.  Sounds like Eclipse and The Poodles had a romp in the hay.

HAHA, I was going to say the same thing, but I figured I should hold my tongue.  If that's a supergroup, then TAC, King Chino and I better get some product out there, because we'd qualify too.   :)
