Marianas Rest thread (death doom)
« on: January 29, 2023, 12:09:33 PM »
New stuff from them, love the music video and visuals. Reminds me of The Final thing on my mind by The Pineapple Thief.

Anyone else listen to them?

I've liked a few of their songs, though I remember there being more death-doom than melodeath.  They are on the more melodic and atmospheric side of that style though, which is what I generally prefer.  Cool HM2 tone in this new track.

Yeah, I have their 2021 album (Fata Morgana) and I'd agree they fall more in the death/doom genre, at least based on that. I liked that record a fair bit (The song Glow from the Edge, in particular, is really good).

I will check out the new tune...

Genre are a bit hard to distinguish sometimes but I wrote melodeatb because that’s what I saw on a few websites for them. Anyway, I just fixed it.

As for Glow from the edge, this track is indeed awesome. My favorite by them though would be Omega. My favorite guitar solo of the death/doom genre. It’s a pretty long one yet I still feel like it ends to soon. The perfect way to finish the album.

Btw, new album is March, 24th in case you guys didn’t know.

Also, what’s HM2?

Oh, I don't think you needed to fix anything  :) You are absolutely right that genres can be pretty fluid, especially these days, with so many "tags" and labels...Death/doom was just the way I would generally describe what I heard (only one album anyway), and other listeners might emphasize other sides of their sound.

Also, what’s HM2?

I believe that's a name of a popular guitar distortion pedal, which produced a sound that ended up being very typical of certain Swedish death metal starting in the 90s (think Entombed, Dismember, etc.). So much so that "HM-2 death metal" sort of became a subgenre itself  :)

Yeah, the Boss HM-2 pedal.  It's most associated with that scene, though a variety of other types of bands have utilized it as well.  It has a very aggressive and distinctive midrange snarl to it that once you hear it a few times you'll start hearing it all over the place.  David Gilmour even used to use one, though in a completely different way.

That song sounds right up my alley. Guess I'll give their last couple of albums a spin.
