I am also very picky with guitars, so my vote goes to the brand which had a custom shop in my town: ESP. Not a fan of mass produced or signature models, since they mostly do not match my expectations for body and neck shape.

I don't play (any longer) but my son owns an Ibanez I love the sound, but I've always loved the BC Rich shapes and designs

Ooooh that is pretty!

The only axe I sling right now is my Gibson SG. Custom 81/85 EMG's and solid steel Grover tuners:

Yeah I fucked up and didn't realize that there was a "besides Music Man" clause in the OP.  Whatevs, it's still the best axe I've ever owned/played and I don't plan on switching up anytime soon.

Strats are hands down THE nicest guitars to play (aside from really high end small specialist guitars like suhr)
They don't necessarily make the best sounding metal guitars, but if I'm reaching for a guitar to have a brief play around on, its always the strat. I only pick up other guitars if I have a particular sound I'm after...

I love my American Strat deluxe and PRS, but I've gotta tell you, there is something about the Schecter Diamond Series 7 string I bought last year that just slays.  The neck is so....perfect.  I have big hands, so the most common issue I have with any guitar is my fingers getting kind of crowded, especially closer to the nut and up on the really high frets when doing leads.

The thing about the Schecter is the neck is so wide that I have plenty of room, it just feels so good.

Sound-wise, though, nothing beats a PRS

I played a few really high end PRS guitars 2,500 and up priced.  None of them ever impressed me.  The first thing I notice about them is that they feel soooo light.  They feel like a toy to me.  I think the tone of a Les Paul is a lot better, personally.  There was just something not right about those PRS's that I played.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

Haven't really played in years since spare time became more rare, and I made the decision to devote my limited musical spare time to focusing on drums and vocals.  But I loved my 89 Charvel.  And although I never owned one, from playing a few Kramer Barettas over the years, I have to say, those are not only great sounding axes, but they are incredibly comfortable to play.  If I were buying another guitar right now, that is probably what I would pick up.

How would EMG pickups sound on my Epiphone Les Paul Custom ?

If you're looking for a very direct metal tone and play it through a good amp, I would imagine it would sound pretty decent. I love the sound I get out of my SG with them given what I play (rhythms similar to Iced Earth, Fear Factory, Exodus etc.) so if that's your bag, you might like it. I have the Zakk Wylde set. I still have the spare stock pickups from the SG. Gotta throw those is my old Epiphone SG and throw on the Gibson tuners while I'm at it. Been waiting years to do it. But this one guitar has satisfied me so much that I haven't felt the need for a backup.

Voted Rickenbacker because it's my dream bass, but I have a schecter right now and it meets and exceeds my expectations.

Nope, just a single 9 volt battery. Barely enough room as is, otherwise I'd probably give it a try. But I'm content with its performance power.

ibanez, 2 humbuckers. i own a js. apart from having the most beautiful design (in my opinion) being round and stuff, it's extremely easy to play- almost effortless. plus you can get pretty much any type of sound out of it, blues, jazz or metal (though getting a proper jazz sound is a bit of a problem  :) ).

Not sure i want an out-and-out metal tone. i just want a thick fat tone - I would put Gibson 57's in - but my Gibson LP has them and they'd sound too similar then ! :P I was considering Gibson Custom Pickups as theyre a bit hotter .

Ive had loads of brands over the years, Fender, PRS, Parker, Epiphone, ESP, Ibanez, but i have to say Jackson. Ive had so many Jackson guitars that for some reason or other i had to sell over the years (last one i sold was to help pay for an engagement ring) but they are always the guitars i cant fault, can totally rely on and always go back to. My EB Musicman JP6 is in 2nd place. But Jackson all the way!

I do not associate EMGs in guitars with a well rounded tone. Screaming metal, sure. Bass is a different story (they are in my 6 string). Although the owner and some of their fans will attest to their versatility. David Gilmour does use them. But I go for passives for versatility, while still being able to get hard rocking tones.

---------

Out of these listed that I play- and own, I went with Fender. I have a Ibanez RG 6 string guitar, LTD-ESP 7 string, Fender Squire, and Fender American Jazz bass. If I did not have the jazz bass, I would have gone with ESP. I really like how the ESP feels more than the Ibanez. Plus the Ibanez RG has the crappiest bridge of all time; it is a shame they ever sold those floating trems in the early 2000's. So I-Been-Had.

As far as pure looks, Gibson all the way for a Les Paul. It is rock royalty (along with Fender,) and I prefer everything more than a Fender Strat with a Gibson LP.
