I've started listening to this band lately, and I absolutely love Act I.  :)

Took ya long enough! :P Welcome to the club.

BTW, it's weird to think that next year Act I is gonna be TEN years old. TDH doesn't even feel like that old of a band.

you mean 9 (Act I was released in 2006).

Between the Heart and the Synapse will be 10 years next year.

Yeah, I've heard so many great things about them but just recently started listening. Which Act do most people consider the best around here? 2?

I love, love, love Act 1. It may be short but it's packed to the gills with good music. My opinion is the minority though, most seem to love Act 2. Act 3 gets a fair amount of love as well.

They're all awesome. I'd say Act II barely beats Act III IMO. Act I is very close behind.

I love them all but Act I is the best for me. It's shorter and more concise, it has some of the best songs ever by TDH and it's also the album that got me into the band. The other Acts are very good too but sometimes I feel they're a bit too long, especially Act II.

I still hold TCS as their best. So much variety, and they pull the different styles off brilliantly. Out of the albums I would say: Act II > Act I > Act III > Migrant

That's pretty much spot on for me, except I view Migrant more favorably. But I love Yellow, Green, and Blue on TCS.

I think the Dear Ms. Leading demos were 2005 (which had maybe half of Act II or so).  I guesstThat could be considered their first release depending on how you define "release"...

A few years ago I would have been really excited, but after Migrant being a slight dip in quality, and especially his latest solo-album (the orchestral one), the bubble has popped, so-to-speak. When I see the word "Orchestral", I just wanna slap Casey's hand and say "No Casey! Bad Casey!".

I think quality aside, people just weren't that interested in an orchestral album. If you compare Migrant and the symphonic album, there was still a lot of buzz surrounding Migrant, whereas few people were hyped for Amour & Attrition. Just by browsing different ratings-sites like Sputnik or Rate Your Music, you can tell that there wasn't a lot of interest for it. Again, not speaking quality, because I think most of the few people who heard the album liked it, overall it just wasn't an interesting concept to a lot of people. Sure, these are only two sites, but overall I didn't hear much buzz for the album, despite being friends with several TDH fans. The album just kinda came out and disappeared, and if I hadn't put down a lot of extra work to keep updated, I would have missed that release and would probably never have heard about it again.

I imagine Casey did that album more himself than anything else, and he's probably not too bothered by how much buzz it generated or otherwise. Only a guess though.

And although I don't find Migrant as incredible as TCS or Act III, it has aged really well for me.

I think a TDH orchestral album will get more buzz automatically, for being a TDH release and not a Casey release. Migrant is very okay for me. It's definitely a good album, I'm just very rarely in the mood for it. The few times I want to listen to TDH, it's more likely that I put on any of the Act albums or Color Spectrum.

Definitely. Assuming it's a rock album with some orchestral backing, I think that could go down really well with the fanbase in terms of hype.

Definitely a new album.  The other band members were out on the west coast recording it back in October and November.  They finished their part in late November. It's definitely not Act IV, but I don't know much else about it.

^^^ Exactly this.

Amour & Attrition was never meant to be a Dear Hunter album or to represent that band at all.  It was just something Casey did on his own because it was a personal dream of his to write and record with an orchestra.  The entire thing was funded by fans, with all kinds of cool bonus extras that people got for donating (including 10 private in-house performances), and he said at the outset that he was only gonna do it if he got enough fan funding, and he would have scrapped the idea completely if the project didn't meet its funding goal.

Obviously it met (and exceeded) that funding goal.  Even on the TDH forums it doesn't come up that much, but I think that's mostly because it isn't a TDH album.

I just learned that Casey moved to Washington State and is working on Act IV. As a fellow resident, I'm pleased as punch. I love his symphony. I can't even believe how talented this guy is juxtaposed to how underground this band is. It's maddening!

yeah, he has been working with Jessy Ribordy of Falling Up/The River Empires whose based in Portland, Oregon, and like you said, also the next TDH record. But the next record won't be Act IV (which is supposed to come, just not next).

Speaking of The River Empires, will we EVER get a follow-up to their amazing debut album? I remember when it came out, back in 2010 (?) that it just completely floored me, and I even liked it more than some of the TDH albums at the time. The guy behind TRE wrote a lot about how they would drop an album every year (or every other year) and they had a plan laid out for the upcoming years, and then it's like they vanished from the face of the earth. I know they released the B-sides collection the year after, but basically nothing since.

Really a shame. :(

TRE released "5 Circles" I recall in 2011, but that was it. TRE B-sides thing came out towards the end of 2010 I recall.

TRE 2nd record, after a failed Kickstarter, Jessy posted some stuff the year after about being nearly done with it etc, the fall of 2012, but after that, went silent.

Jessy did a live video chat last September and talked about it a little bit, but from what I recall, he has kind of put TRE on the side. Although Falling Up, his other/main group, is going to be in-effect retiring after their upcoming record (and tour?) this year.

Falling Up newsletter:

Quote
With everything that's been going in the past 5 years we've solemnly decided that now is the best time to put an end to Falling Up as we all know it.

We've had one heck of a career and feel super blessed to have a fan base that has stuck around and supported us as an Independent band and for that we say THANK YOU!

But we have one more album in us! We have written a new collection of songs that we're really excited to put to tape and get in your hands. With only 9 days left to make our goal we need your help to make it happen!

Check out our Kickstarter campaign and be apart of the group of fans to help us get to the goal! When you pre-order new album you will be making this album possible. Even just a dollar will go a long way!

We appreciate your support!

But from that chat, I recall he mentioned how TRE isn't over (nor is the sideproject from that The Gloomcatcher), but not where his time has been spent of late; but his time has or will also be spent on the novels he's been writing. But he also mentioned working with Casey and a new band.

I think he was trying to shop TRE in Hollywood, and maybe didn't have much if any success with that, it kind of hurt his motivation to make the music for it. But, perhaps his recent time with Casey will change that, as I know Casey really loved the music he helped make for it.

Casey did a reddit Q&A last week with some extensive info regarding the new album, touring, The Receiving End of Sirens (and even some info from his past including appearing on an episode of The Osbourne's lol), The River Empires and a lot more.

There was some great info in that AMA.  Somebody dug up the old Osbournes episode and I watched a bit of it.  Pretty hilarious.  I was also fairly shocked to learn that Connor was basically kicked out of the band.  Sounds like there's some bad blood between him and Casey now, which is pretty disappointing, as I always found Connor to be really likeable.

yeah I agree, I always really enjoyed chatting with Connor before and after shows.

On the flipside, I'd never heard of this band Happy Body Slow Brain whose frontman Matt something helped them out I guess on a recent tour. I checked them out and am really liking a lot of their music, although I guess Matt used to be in the band Facing NewYork who I used to like a bit (a lot of people on some other forums I know loved them).

But the reddit q&a is well worth reading. The Obsorne episode, I honestly barely recognized Casey. But it was that many years ago I suppose.

Definitely pumped for Act IV. A return to the concept after such a long break should definitely yield some fantastic new material.
