As I tend to do when I get excited for a new album I tend to go back and relisten to old albums.  I listened to all 3 Acts and The Color Spectrum today and now I'm super excited for the new album.

Also, if you missed the acoustic performance...shame on you.  What a great way to spend 55 minutes.

Damn... you must not have gotten much else done.  I don't think even I have ever listened to that much TDH in a single day.  I don't think I've ever actually even listened to all of TCS in a single sitting, except for live performance of it.

I missed it!  :wahhh:
I know at least two people who recorded it though, so I'm hoping it shows up somewhere soon.

Really?  I rarely have enough time to listen to it all at once... my favorite way of listening to is to listen to it all in order, but for the most part I just listen to individual Eps

I did the full thing once.  But mostly I just do it by EP.

What was the set for the acoustic show?  I missed it :/

Yeah I mean it's one big collection to me. It's the same with something like "Feed to Feed" by Oceansize, which is sort of a 4 hour long live-boxset, over 3 nights where the band plays their albums in full and B-Sides. I listen to that in one sitting everytime as well.  :lol

I actually usually do listen to the full TCS. I dunno why, but I treat it like a full album.

Well I mean, I do think of it all as a single piece of work... I just rarely have the time to listen to it all at once.

Actually, I got a lot done that day.  I listen to music in my office all the time while I work.  Matter of fact, writing assignments, making lecture notes, reading journal articles, grading assignments, and the other aspects of work I do alone are unbearable without music or entertainment.  I listened to the Acts at work, and at home I listened to TCS while making and eating dinner, and while organizing my CD collection.  And thanks for the youtube link.  If it ever goes down I may ask you to hook me up with a digital copy.

Zep, if you find out how much he made in tips from that show I'd be interested just to see if my guess was accurate - and if he feels it's profitable enough to do again.

I'm trying to check out The Dear Hunter and was recommended The Color Spectrum by a friend. Am I being led in the right direction as a starting point or is my friend insane?

Act II or III would be better.

My friend's really gotten into TDH through the Color Spectrum, just keep in mind its not really their "typical sound," as its all over the place in terms of direction and influence, but its damn good for the most part.

If you have TCS box set on CD, there is a bonus DVD with a documentary part where Casey drives across the country meeting fans.  In it he says he doesn't listen to a lot of music because he is focused on his own and he doesn't want to subconsciously lift something from someone else, so I'm not surprised he isn't familiar with it.

I have no idea how much he made.  People on LatR are guessing between $1,000 - $2,000, but there's really know way to tell.  A few hours before the chat, Casey dropped into our chatroom and somebody asked him how much he makes from these things (which, imo, was a pretty inappropriate question), but he just responded by saying something like "I don't want to sound like I'm complaining or get into the sob story of what I make, so lets not even go there".  More generally speaking though, I don't think the band really makes him all that much money.

I personally would start with Act II.  TCS is great, but it's kind of a lot to take at once, and it's so crazy diverse that it's tough to get a sense of their real signature sound.  If you do want to start with TCS though, I would say the Violet EP is by far the closest to what they normally sound like.

He's also said in the past (off the record) that he isn't really a fan of Coheed.  I don't think he meant it in the sense of "I dislike their music"... but more in the sense of "I don't really listen to them".

I just found it funny since they tour with Coheed all the time. Maybe not by Casey's choice based on his comment on stageit of not always getting to pick.

I think they did that more because it makes sense and it's great exposure for the band, rather than because of any particular love of Coheed.  I think there's also somewhat of a relationship between the bands - During around 20008 - 2009, TDH and 3 used to play shows together now and then, and obviously 3 has some pretty tight connections with Coheed.

Based on my interactions, that certainly seems the case.  Other than a love of TDH and (for some people here) Coheed, DTF seems to have little in common with TDH people.  My view could just be skewed because I am a metal and prog head, but while they were nice folks, I wasn't really familiar with most of the stuff they listened to, and likewise they weren't familiar with a lot of the metal and prog I like.

Yeah, it's definitely two different worlds.  But I feel like there are a lot more DT fans who are also TDH fans than there are TDH fans who are also DT fans.  Then again, I don't see a whole lot of consistency with TDH fans when it comes to other music.  There are very few bands I can think of where I can say "Most TDH fans also are really like ______"

I think some of the obvious names like dredg and The Mars Volta, but as a whole, TDH fans and DT don't come from exactly the same place. 3 or even Porcupine Tree, although the latter might have made more sense if that tour TDH did with PT were longer. I know Steven Wilson even said he would like to bring TDH on tour in Europe with him. But of course PT aren't exactly active right now. Perhaps with his solo band though.

I feel like bands like dredg and TMV tend to be popular with the people on LatR, but I don't get the sense that that's quite as applicable to the general TDH fanbase.  I've spent a lot of time getting to know other non-LatR fans through both the fan club and from just meeting people at shows, and I find that a lot of the people I run into at shows haven't even heard of half the bands that are so popular on LatR.  TDH fans in general seem to be quite a unique and diverse group.  I'd say the bands that I've found most consistently liked by other TDH fans are probably bands like Thrice, Circa Survive and As Tall As Lions.

reminds me of what I'm doing with the 2 new Falling Up albums, but in their case, they are releasing the albums gradually over the period of months. Something I wonder/wished Casey had considered doing with TCS.

Do you use Spotify?

If so, all you need is this playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/zeppelindt/playlist/0uPLhda1UYReYBFPWgS6vE

It's an hour-long playlist put together collectively by the members of the Dear Hunter forum with the express intention of serving as a well-rounded introduction to the band.
