I'm not saying it's a bad sounding album, but I can still hear the clipping in some certain loud parts throughout the album. Enough for it to be noticeable to me, I dunno if others notice or care... but I do. It doesn't make me like the album any less, but it just kind of bothers me when i can hear things like that

So I just started listening to TDH thanks to a submission in my Song Roulette. I've only listened to Acts I and II so far, but they are both great. My favorite song as of now is Red Hands.

I was wondering if The Recieving End of Sirens is worth checking out as well?

...my name is Araragi.

Wut. I have NEVER thought of Act III as at all overcompressed. ???

Seriously?

Act III is so freaking clippy I can't even listen to it with ear-buds in. I have to use speakers because otherwise the clipping gets way too annoying. Just check out "The Tank" for example.

96 kbps probs.  :lol

OnT though, I have never heard anything wrong with Act III, but again... I don't listen to music in surround or in so crystal clear ways that minor details are annoying.

I'm listening to this:

Just let it be know that I am *not* the type of person who opens things up in audacity immediately as soon as I get them. After listening to this particular album though I started to noticed that it was clipping to the point of making me uncomfortable, so then I opened it up and saw that the album had near Systematic Chaos levels of brick-walling.

I know that insinuating Casey Crescendzo is less than perfect is kinda a sin around these parts, but all the Dear Hunter albums seem to suffer from really lack-luster production values. Except TCS, and I can't help but think that's because it wasn't Casey doing it alone.

Can you really blame him? He's a pretty normal guy, with almost no money and no big names willing to produce his work. I'd say the fact that we have as much music from him as we do is a miracle in and of itself.

This.
Honestly, I'm just glad for his music.
He pretty much came from nowhere, and is still a nobody (sadly) in most of the world, the fact that we have his music, that's more then enough to be happy about. :)

Maybe in 2018 he will have Steven Wilson producing all his albums.  :heart

FYI - Casey would be the first person to tell you that he's far from perfect.  In fact, I get the sense that all the "OMGILOVEYOUYOURESOAMAZING" stuff makes him seriously uncomfortable.

Although, note that a lot of other artists really like his production abilities and he's been hired to produce a bunch of other albums for smaller bands (e.g., The River Empires, Forgive Durden, Naive Thieves...).  Although maybe he takes a different approach when its not his own music.

Dug up and dusted off from the deepest corners of the internet:

"Red Wine" by Enter Saints (the only released demo from the 2007 collaboration-that-never-came-to-be between Casey and Brandon Saller from Atreyu).

I don't. People need to stop taking things like this so personal or view it as an attack on the band.  :P I still love Act III, I love TDH, but there is clipping on there. Not everyone's ears can hear it. If you can't, you're lucky. But for people like me and PC, it can get grating trying to do a whole album with a lot of clipping. I don't consider myself an audiophile, I guess my ears are just more sensitive to this kind of stuff because I usually notice it, and in some cases it makes albums un-listenable for me (like Death Magnetic and Vapour Trails, although Act III is nowhere near as bad as those).

Maybe you shouldn't think I was attacking your post.

But really, I just used your post as a jumping off point. Sometimes people are overly defensive of their favorite artists, even when the criticism isn't that big of a deal. And in this case, I don't think I'm "crazy" for hearing something in the recording.

Anyways, WHAT WAS YOUR NAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I wasn't taking it personally at all, I just honestly can't see a problem with the sound on Act III. And it's not like I'm blind (deaf) to overcompression, as some albums really annoy me with it. I guess maybe I just have a different threshold.

Just got the CD of Act II yesterday, and it osunds AMAZING!  :D The Lake and The River is such an amazing song and the last 5 songs are an incredible run.

I wish I got to see Black Sandy Beaches live, but they played it a couple before/after my show.
