On a brighter note, I wasn't entirely sure how much I liked the new album until an hour ago. Listening in the dark, an hour before midnight, just made the album click hard. Every song absolutely shines in that setting. I'm not even sure anymore what my favourite song is, even though an hour ago I would have said Anathema without a second thought.

Really looking forward to seeing them live for the second time in October!

It's interesting that you mention listening late at night. I think that definitely makes for a good DS listen. On the other hand, I've always felt that WHBWH and WS really come to life during the daytime. I used to put WHBWH on first thing every morning.

whenever I finally do end up checkout out Anathema.

Do it!

I've got a playlist for Anathema, and I've heard a few of their songs, but I've never given an actual full listen to any of their albums. Anybody have any recommendations on what album would be best?

I've heard a lot of different opinions on the new album.

If you want happy I would suggest starting with We're Here Because We're Here (even though I prefer Weather Systems, for the most part).

If you want something moodier I'd suggest Judgement.

I've listened to Judgement, We're Here Because We're Here, Weather Systems, and Distant Satellites, and the last two are definitely the best them. I just like the symphonic atmospheric stuff better. Plus Lee Douglas is more involved, and adds so much to the sound.

Thanks. I'll start with Judgement and Weather Systems for now.

EDIT: Just finished the albums. I preferred Judgement, mostly because of the gloomy tone of the album. I really did love both albums though; the female vocals do add a nice texture to the songs, and there are some beautiful melodies. Lots of emotion in both albums, and both are on my "To buy" list. I'll have to give it more listens before I pass judgment (heh) on individual tracks. I'll definitely be listening to the new album soon.

This band is phenomenal.

I agree about Weather Systems, but I think WHBWH is the perfect soundtrack for a sunset (or probably a sunrise, but I've never had the chance to listen to it so early).

Do you have some favourite songs by Anathema? I prefer listening to their full albums but my favorite standalone tracks would be Deep, A Simple Mistake and The Beginning and the end (those lyrics :heart )

If I were to make a top15 Anathema songs, these would surely be on there: (no particular order)

Universal
Thin Air
A Simple Mistake
Anathema
Distant Satellites
The Lost Song (Part 1 + Part 2 + Part 3)
Internal Landscapes
Untouchable (Part 1 + Part 2)
Flying
A Fine Day to Exit
Temporary Peace
One Last Goodbye
Emotional Winter
Regret
A Dying Wish

And that's still with some minor cheating and leaving off some really good ones

Two way tie at the top with Internal Landscapes and One Last Goodbye, for me!

After that it becomes much more difficult

'Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second' was my favourite for quite a while, but I think I'd have to say 'A Simple Mistake' is my #1 now. Loving 'Anathema' at the moment though, that will probably end up in my top 3.

Tier 1  :tup :hefdaddy :metal :heart :coolio :tup -
Anathema
Ariel
----------
Tier 2  :tup :coolio :tup -
The Lost Song - Just grouped this together as one as I'm struggling to separate them at the moment. They'd all go into this tier though.
----------
Tier 3 :tup :tup -
Dusk (Dark is Descending)
You're Not Alone
-----------
Tier 4  :tdwn  -
Take Shelter
Distant Satellites
Firelight

As you can probably tell from that list, the album kind of goes out with a whimper for me sadly :lol Still love it as a whole though. Keep meaning to play around with the order to come up with something a bit more balanced.

"Anathema" really sounds like a mix of something from A Natural Disaster and something from We're Here Because We're Here. I know the band hinted that the song was even older than that. I just love it though. How that guitar kicks in at the end, the song has that anthem-feel to it. The outro reminds me a lot of how Flying is constructed, with a similar idea and having the outro just explode.

Oh yeah, they were. Shame they seem to be playing rather static setlists the last few years. I've seen them four times now, and there are a lot of songs that were played on 3 or 4 of those occasions.

It's gonna be so nice finally getting to see them in November. I didn't think they would return to my city again, and after the miserable failure of missing that show (venue had 18 year old limit, it was 1 ½ week before my 18th birthday), I never thought I would get a chance to see them. Luckily I was wrong.  :heart

While it's probably on the lower half of things for me, I think it's still great. I think/hope that the lack of appreciation it gets is at least in part a testament to how great the rest of the album is. There's not a track on the album that I would even contemplate skipping, and that definitely includes Lost Song Pt. 3.

You're Not Alone definitely does get a lot of shit, though.  :'(

I'm an Anathema fan from the A4 days and have most of their albums, so when I found out they were coming to Australia, I was pretty excited.
Gig day and I find out a mate has a spare ticket, so it saved me $80.

The venue holds around 1000 and it was packed more than I had seen previous.
Anathema came onstage and from then on the crowd went nuts.
I have to admit that I didn't know a lot of the material as well as I could have, but enjoyed every song.

The sound was crisp clear and powerful, but not too loud. The lights were great and having the audience sings just about every word from every song made the evening even more magical.

Intro A New Machine (Part 1)
(Pink Floyd)

Untouchable, Part 1
Untouchable, Part 2
Thin Air
Sunlight
The Lost Song, Part 3
Anathema
Deep
The Storm Before the Calm
Universal
Closer
A Natural Disaster
Distant Satellites
A Simple Mistake

Encore:
Are You There? (Danny solo acoustic)
Parisienne Moonlight
One Last Goodbye

There's a surprising lack of Distant Satellites songs, but I have a feeling they might play more of them for the Europe part. Was this their first time in Australia? Might explain the more "safer" setlist.
