That's awesome. I really want them to release that DVD with the orchestra they played with soon. I cannot wait to hear Lightning Song with an orchestra fdjsfdksl. Best song 2012.

So after the concert at the Tilburg, Anathema will have filmed two concerts for a Blu-ray/DVD release next year? I wonder if they will film another concert!  :lol

2 DVD gigs? I didn't see this coming!

I hope the rest of the setlist will also include some songs that weren't played in Bulgaria. Looking at the setlists from this Fall, they've played Wings of God pretty frequently and songs like Angelica, Empty and Angels Walk Among Us occasionally, so I hope those and some possible surprises will be in the set for Tilburg.

I can't decide whether this or BTBAM's new album is my favorite of the year. I'm leaning towards this.

It was for a while, right now I feel comfortable about it being in my top 5 though. (out of the ~75 albums I've heard this year)
The top5 would be: Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind, Swans - The Seer, Ancestors - In Dreams and Time, BTBAM - Future Sequence and the new GYBE.

Anathema would be around top25/top30.

Oh, I don't know if that's the order to be honest. Right now I'm feeling Converge as nr 1, but the others are not in any particular order. BTBAM might be 2 or it might be 5, it depends on at what time I try to rank them. BTBAM can still retake the throne for number 1 before the year ends. ;)

Any recommendations for an Anathema virgin? Looks like they have a pretty extensive discography and I have no idea where to begin.

I'm not necessarily looking for their "best", because I want to have something good to build up too, but I'm interested in getting into these guys.

It's difficult, because their older albums are doom metal albums, whereas their newer ones are more neo-proggish. I reccomend you start with We're Here Because We're Here, because that's my personal favourite and follow it up with the ones that came before, Judgement and Alternative 4 most notably. The take the newest (Weather Systems). If you ever get interested in checking out their history, you could try out their doom metal albums, the first two they did, or Eternity, which marked their first shift towards a newer sound, but they don't play anything from them anymore.

Discography:

    Serenades (1993)
    The Silent Enigma (1995)
    Eternity (1996)
    Alternative 4 (1998)
    Judgement (1999)
A Fine Day to Exit (2001)
    A Natural Disaster (2003)
    We're Here Because We're Here (2010)
    Weather Systems (2012)

I also think WHBWH is better than WS. Stronger songs, more variety, less of the "every song has the same structure" and when that album came out the sound felt fresh, meanwhile WS is another album in the same style.

With that said I still think WS is a great album.

Want Zant said, basically. I guess it's all a matter of preference, but I heard WHBWH when it was just released and it blew me away. I also think the inidividual songs on the former are better than on Weather Systems, though the latter also contains some very strong tracks. That's not to say WS is bad, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of them playing it in full tonight, but WHBWH is just better in my opinion.

WHBWH was my first album as well. I remember being positively impressed by it, but I just let them go for almost a year. Then a couple of months ago I got Weather Systems and tried to like it. It's really good, but non phenomenal, except for the Untouchables, which are really phnomenal

For me, Weather Systems was a hit on first listen, but it hasn't had that much staying power. I mean, I still listen to it occasionally and really like it, but it doesn't hit me as hard as it used to. On the other hand, I had no idea what to make off WHBWH at first but it just continues to grow on me. Right know WHBWH would probably make my Top 10 albums of all time while Weather Systems is "just" a great album. Also, WHBWH was basically my soundtrack for a trip to La Réunion, which is just a stunningly beautiful island, and i kinda associate the album with that trip. So that's another point in WHBWH's favor.

It's a tough one. I certainly think it's a lot closer than you're suggesting but I guess that comes down to preference.

WHBWH isn't quite as consistant as WS, IMO. I think the flow of WS is slightly superior, but for individual tracks - WHBWH probably takes it.

When I thought Dreaming Light was the epitome of a stunningly beautiful 5 minute track, Lightning Song came along and edged it.

Untouchable 1 and 2 surpass anything Anathema has done before, IMO. And the crazy thing is, I didn't even like the first song when it came out!

Either way, they're both brilliant albums.  :metal

Pain is temporary. Pride is forever.

I like Weather Systems just a smidge more than WHBWH, but that's mainly because of Lightning Song and The Storm Before the Calm, which have cemented themselves as my favorite songs of the year.

I like both. The only problem for me with The Storm Before the Calm is that it feels completely disjointed. I like both the first half and the second half of the song, but there's no connection between them IMO.

Another vote to WHBWH - feels more consistent and diverse. WS has a few songs that surpass anything on We're Here... but as a whole the latter works much better.
The only problem for me with The Storm Before the Calm is that it feels completely disjointed. I like both the first half and the second half of the song, but there's no connection between them IMO.
Agreed, it suffers from The Ministry of Lost Souls syndrome.

Anyway, here's the setlist for last night's DVD gig: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/anathema/2012/poppodium-013-tilburg-netherlands-63daba0b.html

:tup for Empty and Wings of God (well, they're not playing the full version but it's nice anyway) - I was hoping for those!
What I find weird is that they skipped Sunlight and The Lost Child, although they had announced that WS would be played in full, (not that I mind, those 2 songs are in the weaker half of the album IMO) and the inclusion of Orion - they could've played one of their own metal songs, like Sleepless or A Dying Wish.

It was an epic show -  too bad I had to miss everything after Internal Landscapes due to having to catch my train  >:(
Orion is cool, but I agree that Sleepless or A Dying Wish (epic song!) would've been better. Really sad that I had to miss One Last Goodbye, love that song..
