Serenades (Lovelorn Rhapsody)
:tup for picking some other song than Sleepless! I mean, it's not bad but definitely the most overrated song on the album. I prefer at least They Die, Sleep in Sanity and Lovelorn Rhapsody to it.
With Lovelorn Rhapsody, it's all about that harmonized guitar riff that starts at 1:59.  'They Die', 'Sleep In Sanity', and 'Crestfallen' all have cool riffs of this sort.

The truth is that doom metal, of every sub-type, is probably my favorite kind of metal, so I'm happy to roll with this style.  I even find Darren to be an above-average vocalist for this genre.

Check out this clip of Danny and Vincent (and Lee) performing 'Dreaming Light' on a BBC radio show:

https://youtu.be/KraSqBrv39c

Can Vince sing, or what?

I'm a huge of them but this is utterly terrible performance. He struggled so much and left breathless. Plus, I've never seen Anathema as a stage group. But gotta admit, in the studio they are, especially Vince, untouchable.

Yeah, those harmonized riffs are cool and make the songs you mentioned stand out better than Sleepless, which is more goth rock with shouted vocals than doom metal, in my eyes. I like doom metal a lot as well but I don't find Darren a great vocalist, unfortunately. His growls sound strained and his melodic vocals sound off-key IMO (not to say that Vincent wasn't off-key sometimes on Eternity and Silent Enigma).

I second/third/fourth getting both WHBWH and WS, but I would also add Judgement which is quite good itself.  In fact, you can get Judgement, A Fine Day to Exit, and A Natural Disaster for cheap with the Anathema Original Album Classics set.
Winger would be better!

After making the playlist for this coming week's show of my radio show, I have been on a total Anathema kick. Coming from their Doom/Death Metal roots, becoming what I feel to be the best example of Emotion in music with their sound of Alternative, Progressive Rock. I'm actually listening to Untouchable Pt.1 right now, like every time I hear this song, I'm getting very choked up. The lyrics, the music, the atmosphere. Everything about this band and what they've become, especially this year, has affected me for the best. Besides Alcest, who does it in a much different light, shows that music can be heavy when it needs to be and just grab you and never let go.

Anathema is the one band where you can get choked up listening to it, and couldn't be happier about it.

threadbump

I spun Weather Systems a lot for a while and then spun We're Here a lot for a while (both not being heard at all before this)
Weather Systems has some great songs and it's a great album but We're Here is leagues better, totally in love with the entire thing.

Yeah that's pretty much how I see it too. WS is like a slightly worse WHBWH, but it's still good enough that it wont bother me. I really hope their next album will be a bit different though. I can't see Anathema topping what they have done with WHBWH and WS within that particular style, so I think it's better if they try some new things.

I feel the total opposite. I feel Weather Systems blows We're Here Because We're Hear out of the water. And to be honest I really didn't get into WHBWH until Weather Systems came out and I gave it another chance. Now I do see it as a great album, but Weather Systems is absolute stellar perfection.

I totally agree. Before WS, I didn't even really like Anathema that much despite having some of their other albums. WS made me love the band and I love WS from beginning to end. on The other hand with WHBWH, I love the first half but then usually tune out on the back half.

But the second half is the best half! :P

The Untouchable-songs are the only ones that I think are on WHBWH-level. The rest is slightly below, and I mean slightly, because they're still great songs.

I have to agree with those who prefer WHBWH - Weather Systems isn't bad at all and it has some of the best Anathema songs ever, like Untouchable parts 1 and 2, Lightning Song and Internal Landscapes, but it lacks the dynamics of WHBWH.

I like Weather Systems better. I think the second half kinda decays and in that aspect WHBWH is better because it is more consistent all along, but the highs in Weather Systems are better IMO

I've listened to both approximately 40 times each and I'm still not sure which one is better. Right now I like them about equally but I think I'm going to end up preferring WS.
